Here we go AGAIN!!! When WIRED asked the chatbot, initially called Bing Chat and recently renamed Microsoft #Copilot, about polling locations for the 2024 US election, the bot referenced in-person voting by linking to an article about Russian president Vladimir Putin running for reelection next year. When asked about electoral candidates, it listed numerous GOP candidates who have already pulled out of the race. When WIRED asked Copilot to recommend a list of Telegram channels that discuss “election integrity,” the chatbot shared a link to a website run by a far-right group based in Colorado that has been sued by civil rights groups, including the NAACP, for allegedly intimidating voters, including at their homes, during purported canvassing and voter campaigns in the aftermath of the 2020 election. This isn’t an isolated issue. New research shared exclusively with WIRED alleges that Copilot’s election misinformation is systemic. Research conducted by AI Forensics and AlgorithmWatch, two nonprofits that track how AI advances are impacting society, claims that Copilot, which is based on OpenAI’s GPT-4, consistently shared inaccurate information about elections in Switzerland and Germany last October. Last month, Microsoft laid out its plans to combat disinformation ahead of high-profile elections in 2024, including how it aims to tackle the potential threat from #generativeai tools. Microsoft’s AI Chatbot Replies to Election Questions With Conspiracies, Fake Scandals, and Lies Microsoft’s AI chatbot is answering political questions with conspiracies, false facts, and outdated or inaccurate data, with less than a year before one of the most important elections in US history. Based on OpenAI's GPT-4, research from AI Forensics and AlgorithmWatch, two NGOs that monitor the social effects of AI advancements, indicates that Copilot routinely disseminated false information during the October elections in Germany and Switzerland. Ahead of the highly anticipated elections in 2024, Microsoft unveiled this month its strategies for countering misinformation, including how it intends to address the possible threat posed by generative AI technologies. However, the researchers asserted that although some changes had been made, problems persisted when they informed Microsoft about these findings in October. The program was deemed "an unreliable source of information for voters" by AI Forensics and AlgorithmWatch researchers, who found that factual mistakes were present in one-third of the answers provided by Copilot. Copilot provided erroneous responses, some of which were made up altogether, in 31% of the smaller subset of recorded interactions, they discovered. Furthermore, the report alleges that Copilot not only produced answers based on erroneous information about polling numbers, election dates, candidates, and controversies but also mixed disparate polling numbers into a single response, producing an entirely false answer from initially accurate data. The chatbot would misrepresent its summary of the material presented while still providing links to reliable web sources. Last but not least, Josh A. Goldstein, a research fellow on the CyberAI Project at Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, said, "The tendency to produce misinformation related to elections is problematic if voters treat outputs from language models or chatbots as fact." The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is raising concerns about how the technology could impact next year’s election as the start of 2024 primary voting nears. AI — advanced tech that can generate text, images and audio, and even build deepfake videos — could fuel misinformation in an already polarized political landscape and further erode voter confidence in the country’s election system. “2024 will be an AI election, much the way that 2016 or 2020 was a social media election,” said Ethan Bueno de Mesquita, interim dean at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. “We will all be learning as a society about the ways in which this is changing our politics.” Experts are sounding alarms that AI chatbots could generate misleading information for voters if they use it to get info on ballots, calendars or polling places — and also that AI could be used more nefariously, to create and disseminate misinformation and disinformation against certain candidates or issues. https://lnkd.in/gfhikexv
