We must 'keep our eyes on the ball': Proactive - rather than reactive approach is not easy for civil society, but it is the only way we would be able to create long term, sustainable change. NGOs often cannot resist the need to react to ad-hoc needs. We react based on political ideas, our sense of identity, and emotions: persuasive motivators that easily sidetrack us from important, long-term, sustainable goals.  Heads of nonprofits and their philanthropic funders must focus: create public attention on the systemic problems, promote long-term, sustainable public policy, become advocates for the public sector’s professionals struggling with the unending flow of demands and political pressure.
