At first glance, the three-year deal between Netflix and the National Football League (NFL) might not seem significant as it only includes two exclusive streaming matches. This December 25, Netflix will be the exclusive global destination for the NFL’s two Christmas Day marquee games: the Super Bowl LVII-winning Chiefs vs. the Steelers and the Ravens vs. the Texans. In subsequent years, it will stream at least one holiday game each year. It doesn’t seem much on the face of it, so why is this a big deal? There are several reasons. More here for subscribers 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/evhKsqkD Overall, it is intriguing and significant. All eyes are now on the NBA, whose current media rights deal ends next year. The NBA seems keen to include a streaming partner in any future deal, suggesting further shifts in the sports broadcasting landscape as current co-incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery might lose out. This would be another significant moment as Warner’s Turner Sports has carried National Basketball Association (NBA) games for nearly 40 years. #SportsMarketing #SportsBusiness #Partnerships #SportsBiz #SportsTechnology #SportsTech #sportsmarketing #SportsIndustry #Sponsorship #brandengagement #brand #livestreaming #NFL

A one-stop shop for Sports Streaming? 📺 This week ESPN, Fox Corporation and Warner Bros. Discovery announced they will join forces to create a yet to be named Sports streaming platform. Sports streaming has become increasingly fragmented with rights sitting across a number of service platforms. This has driven up the monthly costs for consumers who want to watch it all. 🏈 A one-stop streaming solution is an interesting proposition to combat this issue. The service will include broadcasts from at least 15 different networks covering the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Hockey League (NHL), Golf, Tennis and The FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States. Pricing for the new platform has not yet been released but it will almost certainly provide a more cost effective way for consumers to access sports. And unsurprisingly it doesn’t include cable networks which could pose a significant risk to those providers. With a launch expected in Autumn it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. #livesports #streaming #sportsnews

The Varsity * Netflix International Olympic Committee – IOC basketball documentary will be ready next year. New episodes of "Sprint" and "Biles: Rising" will debut in the fall. * Peacock's sports strategy explained: “In addition to scoring a Team U.S.A.-high 24 points in its gold medal victory, Stephen Curry won with his new comedy series 'Mr. Throwback,' which ranked #1 on Peacock [Saturday], reaching more accounts than all other series on the platform.” * Venu wants to launch on Aug. 23, so expect a verdict in fuboTV Network's case against it soon. Eriq Gardner's quick prediction: "It feels like a preliminary injunction might just be on the table." * The story is not just that FOX Sports is nearing a Super Bowl sell out. It's that Fox is using the Super Bowl's popularity to help sell Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason games. * Phil Mickelson on LIV Golf's TV deal: “Television and viewership for sports, especially golf, is changing. The old-school media and the way that we’ve done it—which is to be on a network and so forth—is not the way of the future.” Plus, after being rebuffed by numerous TV networks to produce their hard-won pair of Christmas Day NFL games, Netflix finally found a dance partner in CBS Sports. Of course, there were several key concessions… https://lnkd.in/eWt9naZ4

🏈 Warmin' up... Did you know that last year's Super Bowl ranks second only to the first moon landing as the most-watched TV program ever? 🚀🏈 Let's sprinkle in a little context here: Live sports reign supreme as the most popular content on American television. In fact, all of the top 10 telecasts in the US last year were major sporting events. This trend isn't new; throughout US history, 22 out of the 30 most-watched television programs ever are Super Bowls (with the 2023 NFL championship game coming in at No. 2, just behind the moon landing). As Netflix and X look to 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 via their WWE announcements... And ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros launch a streaming site (take a look at this): 𝗣𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲: 🏈 NFL: $17 million 🏏 IPL: $13.4 million ⚽ EPL: $11 million ⚾ MLB: $11 million 🏀 NBA: $9 million 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 1️⃣ Sports Media = $60B market in 2024 2️⃣ Sports Docuseries = $151B market by 2027 ──── 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲: Sports are one of the last places to consume live content (hence why all these platforms want to house their content to drive eyeballs/subscribers). And with media contracts spanning several years, sports have become a resilient asset class that typically outweighs downturns in the economy. Expect to see more big announcements across sports media.

Sports media rights landscape continues to look good as the second major deal of 2024 lands. And, as no surprise to me, the company - Netflix - that claimed to have no interest in live sports is now in the live sports business with the WWE. Let's look at the details for "Raw": - $500M a year, $5B total, roughly 2X the prior deal w/ Peacock - WWE spread the bets, USA, CW, Netflix, a la National Football League (NFL) - Outside of the US, Netflix gets it ALL in 2025 - Netflix is officially in the global sports livestream business now (2025) What to watch next: - Netflix and Peacock have a year to look at data and fight for the rest in '26 - Does this mean MORE sports deal for Netflix coming? Really, the analysis here is: - More tier 1 sports to FAANG, no surprise - Sports is so "sticky" that buyers are willing to pay the price - AAA content will get the $$$, even in a post "peak TV"/cutback era - Obviously, with ZIRP over and profit mattering, less will be spent elsewhere #sports #streaming #wwe #TKO #netflix #mediarights

As per Netflix, Christmas Day National Football League (NFL) games will be played on the streamer. The major streamer’s aggressive move into LIVE sports, specifically the NFL, is incredibly encouraging. Despite the NFL's massive audience, which drew 97 out of the top 100 US broadcasts of 2023, the NFL audience is only monetized by its broadcasters five months out of the year. X League, positioned as America's No.1 sport's entry into Women's Sports and already drawing NFL audiences across its digital and social platforms, will become the perfect complimentary sports media IP leading into each NFL season to further monetize the built-in NFL audience that sits dormant for the remainder of the year. #football #linear #streaming #global #viewership #nfl #xleague #herturn

A bit surprising that it took Netflix this long to invest in the live sports streaming business. Netflix's prior sports content approach which included documentaries like “Drive To Survive”, "Break Point" and “Quarterback” have been hugely successful and the WWE's focus on drama and carefully curated storylines sits comfortably within Netflix's existing strategy. It will be interesting to see if they pivot into other sports at some point. But with Apple (MLS and the MLB) and Amazon Prime (NFL Thursday night football) already in long-term deals with the more popular sports within the US market, that may not happen anytime soon. The streaming landscape and sports rights market dynamics in Europe is also different. Amazon, for instance, faced intense competition in the bidding for sports rights, and the escalating costs of securing exclusive broadcasting rights and ultimately reconsidered their investment in European live sports (football), opting instead to focus on boxing in 2024. Interesting to see where they go from here.
