Today is WORLD CHILDREN'S DAY https://lnkd.in/e-E_pCmH - they are our precious future, yet children are being relentlessly killed, maimed and orphaned in war zones. Meanwhile in the UK more than 1 in 3 children are living in poverty, more than half from families with more than two children. Poverty causes suffering, hunger, poor diet and blighted opportunities. https://lnkd.in/eti-Ngvi. Scrapping the two child benefit cap would lift more than 620,000 out of poverty. It should be done now. The Lancet have released a series on investing the first 1000 days of childhood https://lnkd.in/eH3jFmB6 Finally there is a world ministers conference for ending violence to children https://lnkd.in/e-B9Ei-4

📢CEFMU is a grave violation of children’s rights, exposing them to violence, limiting education, and depriving them of a safe childhood. On this #WorldsChildrensDay, we reflect on the First Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children #EVAC (Bogotá, Colombia, November 2024). The conference brought together world leaders, civil society, and child advocates to drive change. Key lessons learnt: ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀: Ending child marriage must be part of global strategies to eliminate violence against children. ➡️ 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: Governments, donors, grassroots CSOs, and youth-led organisations must work together to protect children. ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: These groups are on the front lines, addressing root causes and connecting children with critical services. ➡️ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Governments have made over 120 pledges to end violence. Accountability and financial investment are non-negotiable to ensure lasting impact. Ending child marriage is achievable if we act with urgency, unity, and accountability. Let’s work together to protect children’s futures. 💡 What role can your organisation play in this effort? Share your ideas and join the movement to end violence against children. 👉 Learn more about our reflections at EVAC by reading our blog: https://lnkd.in/eSJ8ASgd #EndChildMarriage #EndViolenceAgainstChildren #HumanRights

In November, governments have an opportunity to make catalytic pledges to make all childhoods safe everywhere - in communities, households, schools, and online. IRC is asking governments to capitalize on that opportunity, to include children living in conflict, crisis, and displacement, and to recognize that caregivers need support if they are to support children and keep them safe. 🌍🌟 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 2024: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 🌟🌍 Today, November 20, where we should honor 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, a powerful reminder of the rights, voices, and dreams of children worldwide. This year, it’s also the 35𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 (𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗥𝗖), a vital framework ensuring children’s rights to safety, education, and development. Children in war zones and in zones of immense social isolation and economic poverty endure unimaginable hardships—displacement, separation from families, and the trauma of violence. Shockingly, 470 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝗿, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 30 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱. Violations of humanitarian laws continue, leaving many children vulnerable to exploitation and suffering. Join me in supporting my friends at SOS Children's Villages International's '𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲' 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 that empowers children in 38 countries to call for peace in their own powerful way. Their message is clear: 👉 “Stop fighting. We want peace.” To world leaders and policymakers: it’s time to prioritize children’s rights in conflict resolution, ensure access to mental health support, and invest in keeping families together. #WorldChildrensDay #StompingForPeace #ChildrensRights #UNCRC #WeCanDoBetter

In #Budget2025 the Children's Rights Alliance is calling for the development of a pilot initiative for the expansion of school meals during holiday time. This can be achieved by leveraging existing community infrastructure, & relationships between schools & summer camps. [Cost: €1 million]. 🥣This month the hot school meals initiative will be expanded to 900 non-DEIS schools. This brings the total number of students receiving hot school meals to over 440,000 students. 🌄However, there is a gap in provision when schools are closed for holiday periods meaning that many children and young people are at a greater risk of food poverty or in experiencing ‘holiday hunger’. Building on the cross-government approach adopted by the Food Poverty Working Group, Ireland can develop solutions to tackle Holiday Hunger. This can reduce the nutritional, social, and financial impacts of food poverty over the school holidays. National Child Protection Week 2024 theme is ‘Every Conversation Matters’, highlighting conversations as powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well. NAPCAN highlight conversations as a way to help us understand issues, craft solutions, value community knowledge and build the brains and social connections of children and young people. The theme chosen this year aims to provide a platform to equip us to have conversations that keep children and young people safe. Earlier this week, we shared our report ‘More for Children: Children’s Experiences of Poverty in Australia”. Bringing children’s voices and experiences to the fore is vital, but so too is the WAY in which children and young people are engaged in this process. At the Children’s Policy Centre we believe that HOW we engage with children and young people must be the primary concern. We follow rights-based, child-centred principles to ensure that children are treated with dignity and their views are respected. Read below for more detail on our methodology. #EveryConversationMatters #NAPCAN Sharon Bessell Cadhla O’Sullivan Crawford School of Public Policy ANU College of Asia & the Pacific The Australian National University

Please join us in celebrating World Children’s Day today. World Children’s Day is celebrated every year on November 20. This day marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. On this day, governments around the world, including Australia, recognise 54 rights that every child under 18 should have. These rights help ensure children can live safe, healthy, and happy lives. For the last two and a half years, Burnie Works has been working with the More for Children research team to understand what helps children live good lives and what challenges they face. This research focuses on rights-based, child-centred approaches involving children and their families to understand, assess, and respond to child poverty. The study is being conducted in two communities in Australia, one of which is located in North West Tasmania. The More for Children research team is working on a series of issue papers based on what children have shared about the challenges they and their families face. These papers aim to raise awareness of children's experiences and advocate for policies and services focusing on their needs. Three papers have already been released on Housing, Transport, and Food Insecurity. The team is also having ongoing discussions with essential decision-makers and policymakers nationwide. On behalf of our partners, we express our deepest gratitude to the children, young people, and their families who participated in sharing their ideas, experiences, and priorities for change. Please visit our website for the initial report and the three issues papers. https://lnkd.in/gQnihvDm #WorldChildrensDay #WorldChildrensDay2024 #UnitedNations

Imagine living in a state of perpetual fear and uncertainty? For so many in the world right now this isn't just a distant image or headline in the news, it's their daily reality. There is no one more vulnerable in the face of genocide, war and conflicts around the globe than children. From Ukraine to Palestine to Yemen to South Sudan, the list of war zones is long, and the pain children and families endure is unimaginable. Think about a child you know, full of curiosity and a thirst for life. A love of their family, their place, their belonging. Now consider that UNICEF estimates that over 43.3 million children globally have been displaced because of violence and conflict. Every child has the right to feel safe. Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has the right to: 👉Live and grow up healthy. 👉Safety, no matter where they are. 👉Care, protection, and a home. 👉Education, play, and participation in cultural activities. 👉Receive help and protection when needed. 👉Despite near-universal ratification of this international treaty, countless children are denied these rights. And this isn't just a problem in "other countries." Here in Australia, children struggle with homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, hunger, incarceration, trauma, neglect and worse. The rights of every child matters. In different ways, in different parts of the world the rights of too many children are being denied. Sometimes systematically, in the most inhumane ways imaginable. The plight of children is a global issue demanding our immediate attention and compassion. As a community, a nation, we have a responsibility to make these rights a reality for every child, not just a promise on paper. Addressing the needs of children in conflict zones and those facing challenges in Australia reflects our commitment to human dignity and the well-being of future generations. 👉As adults, we have the duty to ensure every child has the chance to thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
