July 15 marked the very hot start to a scientific campaign focused on just that - HEAT. Over two weeks, a team of scientists from Argonne - in collaboration with university researchers, community members, and students - will embed themselves in the neighborhoods down Roosevelt Road and south to Woodlawn to understand how Chicago's built environment influences heat. It's an effort known as CROCUS Urban Canyon - https://lnkd.in/dWeSK2Tq The research team will collect data and gain insights that will provide local communities with greater knowledge to implement climate-resilient strategies. The team's insights will also inform new climate models, which are essential to accurately predicting weather. Armed with precise, localized data, policymakers and residents will be better equipped to mitigate the effects of climate change – things like heat islands and poor air quality – thus improving the well-being of neighborhoods throughout Chicago. The research team is helping shift the paradigm on how we conduct climate research and develop sustainable, climate-resilient cities.

🚨 NEW POD ALERT 🚨 What is the optimal age to teach climate change science to young people? Chris Nelson, Ed.D., project manager, and Kristin Hurst, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Resources at Southern Illinois University, teamed up on an ORAU-Directed Research and Development project to study when it is best to teach young people about climate change science. They worked under the hypothesis that high school students have more developed cultural and ideological viewpoints, whereas the worldviews of middle school students are not quite as developed. At the same time, they reframed the conversation to demonstrate how climate change is impacting things young people enjoy -- food, activity, travel, etc. This conversation focuses on how they approached their research, what they learned and what could happen next as a result of their work together. A huge thank you to Andrew Wiebe, Chief Science Officer at riskthinking.AI, for his insightful guest lecture at our recent seminar, hosted jointly with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. Andrew, an atmospheric scientist with over 20 years of experience, highlighted the critical role of integrating climate science and big data to address the evolving challenges of climate risk. He stressed the importance of developing dynamic tools to quantify and manage these risks, shaped by ongoing changes in our physical environment, politics, economics, and demographics. At Riskthinking.AI, Andrew is working on stochastic models that account for the uncertainty and variability of global climate projections.
