I've noticed an uptick in grumblings when it comes to experiences. Whether someone goes to a restaurant, a resort, a theme park, or travels by air, increasingly the challenges are bubbling up to the surface. There are always going to be challenges. With people sometimes forget is this: no matter what you make, create, design, and sell, you are first and foremost in the relationship business. Be mindful of this. Be willing to hold yourself and those around you accountable. Relationships can refresh long after that thing you've acquired has been consumed. When I worked in theme park leadership, challenges provided two opportunities. The first was the chance to identify whether something needed to be addressed because it was impacting regularly and not occasionally. The second was the opportunity to go above and beyond. I was taught early on if someone brings back a bad piece of fruit, don't give them the plant because that's not an equitable exchange. I disagreed. Giving the plant not only buys you goodwill, it buys you the kind of advertising and future relationship-building in the way of referrals that no amount of money can purchase. We can always grow more plants but with bad experiences from which there has been no recovery, we cannot grow repeat customers (naturally these are my opinions and not those officially held by any company). Jan-Benedict Steenkamp, we conducted the first in the world blind taste test using the same wine from the same winery, one packaged in a glass bottle, one in an aluminum can. 4 different wines from 4 different wineries. Random participants, aged 21-74. Conclusion: "...no statistical difference existed based solely on the consumers' preferences... ...The vessel itself, bottle or can, has no impact on preference..." "We conclude that branding and marketing activities are effective in the wine industry to help shape perception, and can have a substantial influence on consumer preference and purchase/consumption... ...While wine's intrinsic cues of taste is stronger in a blind taste situation, nonetheless wine's extrinsic cues can be more powerful in the real marketplace." Dilemma: French chateau or Costco Kirkland Private Label? What information is dominant when people evaluate products? That question hit me when I was at Costco, seeing this Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine. Could I serve that to guests? The terroir is positive. But it is branded as Kirkland. For premium wine (sort of) that is a negative. Most of us would be reluctant to serve a store brand to your guests, not? Which market signal is determinant? My conundrum highlights that understanding consumer decision processes has real practical relevance. There’s this red brick Thai restaurant Annie and I go to in the city. I dare say it’s our favorite restaurant as we always seem to find a way to mention it. So what’s so spectacular about it? Nothing. We sit at the bar. The noodles steam when the bowls rattle down, we smile at the first bite, and we’re out in 45 minutes. When you know what you’re getting, your brain has to do less work. Which means the path to get it is quicker, easier, and requires less thinking. Which means you’ll travel it more. It’s easy to believe splash is what creates buy-in. For years, I have counseled my clients about the importance of consistent and clear messaging. You can't say one thing to your employers, another to your customers and yet a third thing to Wall Street. This week, Wendy's was the prime example why that doesn't work. If, indeed, Wendy's wants to offer discounts to customers at low-traffic times to drive additional foot traffic to stores and then basically ask if the customer "wants fries with that"...well there's not much new or controversial about that. Presumably, the innovation comes from being able to offer discounts that incentive customers on a hyper-local level. But you have to say all of that to everyone. And if you ever do find that you need to issue a statement clarifying a previous statement admit that the reason it was necessary was because you did not clearly articulate your initial message and not because the media"misconstrued" what was said. #corporatecommunications #clearcommunication #leadership #soapbox https://lnkd.in/gMEW7jP6
