Why join and invite? ➡️ An antidote to disconnection and polarization can start with the simple act of invitation. Being together with those around you is a low-lift way to start rebuilding the trust that society depends on. We invite you to take your next step in building bonds — it could be as simple as playing pick up basketball, or joining your PTA, or volunteering once a month. Joining and inviting helps us feel whole, feel belonging, and feel that repairing the brokenness in our society is possible. It’s hard — but necessary. ➡️ Do you feel like you’ve lost the muscle or desire to connect with others? There’s so much in society that seems designed to separate us. We stay behind our screens and within our bubbles. It takes courage to make new connections; it’s an act of resistance to prioritize togetherness. Consider what you might need — a plan, a friend, a goal? Take inventory of what is holding you back and what you (and your community) might gain if you build more civic relationships. Try this. ➡️ If you’re new to an area or feeling disconnected, join an activity or club in your community (and even better, invite a friend to come with you). It doesn’t have to be a big formal group, but something that gives you a purposeful way to connect with others. It could be a community garden, a group at your place of worship, or a family activity at the local community center. And if you’re already part of an organization or gathering, make a commitment to invite others to join. If you go to volunteer, attend a town hall, or are a part of a club at your school, think about who might be up for coming along. By weaving connections, you’re strengthening the social fabric around you. When inspiration is limited because capacity is low, empowering creativity becomes the 'antitode'; principally obtained by volunteering. This affirms the reason why EMPOWERING CREATIVITY: THE EVOLVING ROLE OF VOLUNTEERING IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY (#ICC24 1.2) becomes a must for every creative mind. Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure of working with a group of dedicated community leaders. Our topic of discussion was around volunteerism, focusing on what organizations can do to attract and retain volunteers. Here are some of the tips I shared. 1. Be organized and ready when people show up to volunteer. 2. Craft a positive experience for your volunteers. 3. Work on your internal issues. If there is disconnect or chaos around your board table, it will be felt by others. 4. Think outside the bubble. It’s easy to get caught up in our own circle of influence. 5. Tell people what you do and why. It’s highly likely that people aren’t even sure what your organization is all about. 6. Make it super easy for people to sign up to volunteer. And get back to them in a timely fashion. 7. Be respectful and appreciative of your volunteers and the time they contribute to your organization. What else would you add to the list? Just concluded my first time speaking as a featured panelist.🎉 Thank you to the Create Action team for giving young people a platform to share our stories! I started my placement with the goal of getting better at verbally communicating my thoughts, and I sure didn't think I'd ever be asked to speak publicly! Thank you for everyone that took the time to listen and attend. A theme that I'm reflecting on, is that those with less power and more barriers become less likely to ask for what they deserve. When given the opportunity for equitable support (in this case through create action) every panelist expressed how they now feel slightly more confident in their abilities and slightly better equipped to stand up for themselves. Recognition goes a long way👏 Another theme is that youth, and others, are often expected to "just accept" their barriers. The reality of my experience and that of my colleagues and other panelists, is that youth are often caregivers, have limited options for living, have less time, and less work-life balance. Their schedules are less flexible, they're often balancing multiple jobs, education, and training, they're often single and self-reliant, and correspondingly have extremely high costs of living.  To start reducing these barriers, I was encouraged by the employer's ideas to increase opportunities for youth networking, to give youth organizational voting power, delegate positions, and working collaboratively so resources are shared and youth are not moved between services so much.
