Some time ago I wrote a chapter on the importance of the questions we ask in architectural design processes. In the context of inclusivity and universal design, questions can help uncover hidden biases in architecture and help align expectations. The chapter is free to download if you follow the link below.
Ever wondered how to seamlessly integrate universal design into your architectural practice? This chapter attempts to clarify the concept of universal design by developing a list of guiding questions that can be used in architectural practices. This list consists of frequently asked questions (FAQ) in design processes and how an alternative to such questions could look like if we put on our universal design glasses. The aim is to help you towards an alternative way of structuring your design practice when possible. The chapter is written by Marie Christoffersen Gramkow, Marcus Tang Merit, Masa Kajita and Ulrika Stigsdotter, members of the Bevica Foundation's interdisciplinary research network. You can read their chapter in the anthology: https://lnkd.in/d5CNHzvS #UniversalDesign #Arcitecture

With sciences R&D developments increasingly migrating to amenitized urban areas, more and more opportunities for architectural innovation are being uncovered. In this blog, my colleagues Brent Van Gunten and Keith Nielsen share how two key Gensler projects in Berkeley and Seattle are prime examples of this innovation, and what they could signal for science buildings of the future. https://ow.ly/Nalg30sz9Gb

How can architects and their clients navigate the tradeoffs between embodied and operational carbon when designing building façades? That’s the question posed by “The Carbon Sweet Spot,” a new research report produced by the Urban Land Institute and researchers from the University of Washington, with support from KPF. Explore their findings in the full report here: https://bit.ly/3wDJ7V4

Curious about what makes an environment "responsive"? This interdisciplinary manifesto dives deep into the intersection of design, technology, and human experience. Authored by leading experts and professionals Allen Sayegh, Stefano Andreani and Matteo Kalchschmidt, Responsive Environments explores speculative urban visions and innovative design projects across different contexts and scales—from interactive artifacts to augmented cities. Drawing on years of research at the REAL Lab at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and featuring work by INVIVIA and other trailblazing practices, this book reveals the experiential layers of our tech-mediated relationship with space. A must-read for those interested in architecture, urbanism, design, and art! Make sure to grab your copy today at https://lnkd.in/d_uvzGpR. This book is also available in e-version.
