"The Future Generations Declaration provides a new hook for the reforms we all want to see. But we also need to make sure that we are focused on genuine implementation over superficial compliance to drive transformation." Sophie Howe is Futures and Wellbeing Adviser to governments, NGOs and corporates and was the first Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. In her article with Claudette Salinas Leyva (School of International Futures (SOIF)) for the current New Economy edition of Alliance magazine, she reflects on protecting the interests of future generations and of the planet, and the future-focused approaches of Wales and the UN. Safeguarding the future for generations to come involves rethinking attitudes to people, planet, and fundamentally, to economics. Just another week at the Accelerator for Systemic Risk Assessment (ASRA)... Our ED Ruth Richardson brought ASRA's voice to the United Nations this week, addressing financing resilience at a key Joint Second Committee and ECOSOC event. Ruth shared key insights from our latest report, 'Facing Global Risks with Honest Hope,' which offers a crucial analysis of this #polycrisis moment and practical strategies for navigating today's complex world. #globalrisks #ASRANetwork
"Imagine what would happen if financial institutions conducted stress tests under dynamic, polycrisis scenarios. Imagine what would happen if funding from public, private, and philanthropic sources flowed away from single-issue policy or siloed projects, and instead towards systemic risk initiatives such as transdisciplinary research and participatory data and evidence generation." This week ASRA's Executive Director, Ruth Richardson, addressed the United Nations’ Joint Second Committee and ECOSOC Side Event on financing resilience. She shared key insights from our new report "Facing Global Risks with Honest Hope" - find out more here: 🌏 https://bit.ly/asra-report 🌏 #SystemicRisks #DRR #SocietalRisks #GlobalRisks #SDGS #GenderData

Sustainability isn’t just making sure you turn the lights off when you leave work. Businesses are exceptionally well placed to make the biggest difference. In 1987 the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) defined sustainable development as: 🚨development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 🚨. [WCED, 1987, p.37] I’m consciously educating myself on Sustainability in business. I want to give a shout out to Matter (formerly Ampli & NERVE) and their partnership with The High Performance Foundation No. 4 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals the United Nations set out in 2015, is Quality Education (inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities FOR ALL) [OU, 2023, Business School reading block 1, p. 53] This foundation is a great example of paying it forward for future generations and Matter’s commitment to supporting this foundation is admirable. You can find details of their current fundraising efforts at Matter (formerly Ampli & NERVE) Kudos to Matter and the High Performance Foundation for doing their bit towards the SDG goals. https://lnkd.in/eCJW8AC9 #SDGgoals #sustainabilityinbusiness #B2B #fundraising #sustainability #OpenUniversity #AI Hollie Keaskin Jason Horsman

Power Shift Towards People and Communities In the realm of development, a resounding call for change echoes through the efforts of civil society organizations, governments, and the international community: a shift in power to the people. This rallying cry, resonating once more, underscores a pivotal moment in our collective journey. Over the past decades, significant investments have been made in awareness building, orientation, and empowerment. These efforts have laid a sturdy foundation for marginalized, impoverished, and deprived communities to step into leadership roles and become decision-makers in their own right. Yet, leadership and decision-making roles alone are not the ultimate goal. True empowerment must result in a tangible shift of power across public and private spheres, systems, and governance structures. The International Land Coalition (ILC), through its new charter, has committed itself to this cause – a "power shift to people." One of the key steps towards realizing this commitment is a transformation in its governance structure. ILC, governed by its council, a major decision-making body comprising its members, has embarked on a journey of governance reform. Its membership includes People’s Organizations (representing Indigenous Peoples, farmers, peasants, pastoralists, women, and youth), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from the global South and North, Global CSOs, and Governmental and Multilateral Organizations. Notably, ILC’s global council, comprising 19 members, allocates 09 seats to People’s Organizations, which can exceed up to 13, representing a significant percentage of POs in the council. This structural reform is not merely symbolic but a substantive change aimed at empowering grassroots movements. While governance reform is not a panacea, it is a crucial and foundational step towards broader systemic change. The road ahead is long, particularly concerning complex issues like land rights. However, these initial steps towards reform are pivotal, setting the stage for a more equitable and inclusive future. As we navigate this trajectory, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering communities and ushering in a new era of people-powered development. Your thoughts are welcome!

Powerful insight on short-termism in global and domestic economies and how this limits the ability of future generations to meet their needs, as well as negatively impacting our ability to meet development goals.
“Our fixation with ‘growthism’ is short-sighted and is only making the rich richer while devastating the world’s life support systems,” warns Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. “GDP and our addiction to consumerism have become dangerous distractions from what is actually important: people’s ability to lead a decent life on a liveable planet. That means guaranteeing a set of fundamental rights to all, including access to social services and the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.” New report: https://is.gd/SugGzk

“Our fixation with ‘growthism’ is short-sighted and is only making the rich richer while devastating the world’s life support systems,” The world's population is expected to increase by nearly 2 billion persons in the next 30 years, from the current 8 billion to 9.7 billion in 2050 and could peak at nearly 10.4 billion in the mid-2080s. People are addicted to hoarding wealth and the economy is narrowed in on maximizing profit, dangerously pushing planetary boundaries 🌎 Economic growth of a country is mainly seen as GDP growth which is not a holistic approach. This report looks at how that type of growth is failing to reduce poverty and inequalities and to create jobs, leading to wholesome growth. Correct link here ➡️ https://bit.ly/3WpnDFS

Global Lead for Community Wealth Building, Chair EDAS, adviser, writer, researcher, speaker, organizational leader and activist.
2moGenuine implementation which changes the here and now is key. Our political economy is driven by fast return and speedy wealth extraction. Future generations activity works at a different pace, and in prevailing political economy is all to often kicked into long grass. Great intentions and fine legislation can easily become virtue signalling beaten under the cosh of fast neoliberal capitalism and the short term fiscal decisions which preclude long term enhancement of public services. Everyday economic system change is key. As such growing economic democracy and giving people more of an everyday stake in economy must be central. Including practical work such as #communitywealthbuilding Ideas and plans for future generations which seeks to work within centrist political mindsets and thus within neoliberal political economy are on a hiding to nothing. Considerations of future generations will always falter unless aligned to deep economic system change and genuine everyday activism on economic ownership.
