On this week episode of the Zac Clark Show, I had a conversation with Shairi Turner, MD, MPH, Chief Health Officer of Crisis Text Line. Crisis Text Line, the only 24/7 nationwide crisis-intervention text-message hotline in America, boasts over 65,000 trained volunteers ready to provide support and resources to those struggling with mental health. In my conversation with Dr. Turner, we delve into the national mental health epidemic. Despite its devastating scope, Dr. Turner's solution-oriented approach is both surprising and inspiring. We covered a wide range of topics, including: - What is Crisis Text Line and how is it making an impact. - The disproportionate impact of mental health challenges on minority communities. - Racial disparities in accessing mental health services and treatment.  - The rise in bullying and self-harm among our youth. The citiesRISE Gathering Space model strengthens the capacities of non-clinical community-based organizations to integrate evidence-based youth mental health promotion and prevention work. The model leverages the existing trust that organizations have established with marginalized youth and enhances their work with a focus on gratitude, kindness, and hope. How do you identify your emotions? How does your body react as you experience different emotions? What activities do you use to support yourself when experiencing fear, anger, sadness, or just feeling bad? Life I Love School (LiL) will support girls as they begin to answer these questions for themselves. We hope to teach girls, so they may grow into young women with the tools to support themselves as they navigate life. Why is this important? According to Gallup's article "U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs" by Dan Witters (2023) 🗒️"Over one-third of women (36.7%) now report having been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lifetime" 🗒️ "Women (23.8%) and adults aged 18 to 29 (24.6%) also have the highest rates of current depression or treatment for depression" This means we need to act now! Through LiL we will support young girls as they learn skills - related to movement, arts, community, and communication - to combat depression and other mental health concerns and diagnoses. No family, neighborhood, or business remains untouched by today’s mental health crisis that is claiming the lives of far too many youth and young adults. We believe that education is the antidote to stigma blocking care, and a collective community response to this health emergency must include young adults as essential partners. That is why we are expanding our partnership with Active Minds, Inc. to bring their interactive Send Silence Packing® exhibit to more than 100 U.S. college and university campuses in 2024 and 2025. The award-winning event features 100 backpacks with the mental health stories of 100 individuals centering on the themes of loss, survival, and resilience. We have seen first-hand the power of the storytelling and knowledge within the Send Silence Packing exhibit. Most important, it is making a difference. Active Minds’ recent survey found 76% of Send Silence Packing attendees supported their own well-being with information from the exhibit and 70% have supported their friends and family. We hope education, business, and community leaders in the cities and towns hosting Send Silence Packing will join us in a unified effort to change the culture around mental health. Did you know that in 2022, there were 203 deaths by suicide in Northern Ireland? Anxiety and depression are on the rise among both young and adult populations, with self-harming incidents increasing. It's evident that we are navigating a complex world, especially post-Covid, where our children are notably struggling. The key to addressing this challenge lies in prioritizing Emotional Intelligence. By focusing on emotional intelligence, we can safeguard children's mental health effectively. It is crucial that we learn how to raise emotionally intelligent kids, be emotionally intelligent parents/adults, and foster a culture of emotional intelligence in our homes, schools, community spaces, and workplaces. By taking urgent action to enhance emotional intelligence, we can prevent future tragedies, lower the risk of mental health issues in children, and secure a brighter future for them. Our children are counting on us to drive this change forward. Let's commit to making a difference together.

🎉 Thanks to Boys & Girls Clubs of America for spotlighting mental health and the opportunity to share! Yesterday, I spoke to a group of 100 teens from across the country about mental health as well as learned from youth leaders. We talked about how to use social media for social change, and I shared more about MHA’s ongoing social media research project. More updates on that— and our soon to be launched survey- soon! An outstanding example of how Bupa and JAAQ. are changing the game. Bupa have just launched their young peoples mental health campaign. Myleene Klass has such an emotional story. Another one where you watch one question, and end up spending a lot longer than you'd thought you would watching every other answer she gives. Childrens mental health is a crisis like no other. Imagine knowing that most social media platforms, where children spend a huge proportion of their time doom scrolling for information, has content on mental health of which an estimated 84% is inaccurate, 12% dangerous. How do you support your kids in the most effective way? Together, we'll be launching a service for children in early 2025. And as a business, given this is the next generation of talent coming through, you can support your people by giving them this parental and young peoples support as part of the JAAQ at Work platform. July is #MinorityMentalHealthMonth. It is essential to recognize the unique challenges and barriers that minority communities face when it comes to mental health. This month serves as a reminder to prioritize mental well-being within diverse populations and to address the disparities in access to mental health resources. Minority communities, including but not limited to black, Hispanic, Asian, and Indigenous populations, often experience higher rates of mental health conditions due to various factors such as systemic inequalities, discrimination, cultural stigma, and a lack of culturally competent care. By raising awareness and promoting mental health education and resources within minority communities, we can work towards breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and improving access to quality care for all individuals. Let us take this month as an opportunity to advocate for equitable mental health support and to create a more inclusive and understanding society for everyone.
