Today on Juneteenth, a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the ending of slavery in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, TX finally learned of their freedom from slavery, Path with Art honors BIPOC community members and the impactful #BlackArtist, Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence was born in 1917 in Atlantic City and died in 2000 in Seattle. He enrolled in his first art classes in the early 1930s. When he was just 23, he had completed five narrative paintings on major historical figures and events in Black history, from Toussaint L’Ouverture to Harriet Tubman. He titled his vibrant paintings with illustrative titles, using simplified, angular figures and forms to create powerful images that characterized his work throughout his career. Be sure to check out Jacob Lawrence’s work on display at Northwest African American Museum where you can learn more about #JacobLawrence and #Blackhistory. Art is a community that connects us all. #SeattleArt #PathwithArt #artHEALS #Juneteenth #Community #seattleartscene

I speak of lynching a lot when it comes to professional spaces. It triggers some people, but there are numerous parallels to the atrocities that occurred during the US Civil Rights Movement and what continues to occur in supposed professional spaces. I use this word because no one goes to work to get slaughtered. Employees expect to be safe or at least move through an equitable process that allows them to share their truths and seek justice when rules aren't followed. Some points I've observed: 1. People who lynch people in professional spaces think they will not be punished for their actions, otherwise the wouldn’t attempt to be so evil. 2. Systems often uphold the heinous acts of harm against employees despite evidence that confirms a workplace lynching has occurred. 3. People who witness lynchings at work often remain silent for fear of retaliation or harm to them in the same way someone was lynched. I define professional lynchings and other terms in this popular 2023 #StopPlayingDiversity podcast episode. Stay safe in these workplace streets, friends. https://lnkd.in/gH8Cc2Eu
Today, Emmett Till would have turned 83 years old. In 1955, he was 14 when he was kidnapped and murdered for “inappropriately interacting with a white woman” in Mississippi. Delving into 'Race and Reunion' by David W. Blight has been a profound experience for us at Nero Strategies. This masterful work dissects the complex memory of the American Civil War and explores how its contested legacy shaped racial understanding in the United States. Blight's insightful analysis reveals the powerful influence of collective memory on national identity and racial reconciliation. A critical read for anyone seeking to comprehend the intricate ties between history, memory, and race. We are proud to announce our collaboration with the Lawnside Historical Society, Inc. who has received a $34K grant to digitize Lawnside's extensive archive from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (https://lnkd.in/gy6PNThg). We will be providing program management and historical consulting. Our work seeks to elevate the deep 19th century economic, social and activist connections between the 1838 Black Metropolis and the surrounding regions. Snow Hill, now called Lawnside, is one of those 'suburbs' of the Metropolis that was instrumental in providing sanctuary for people self-liberating from enslavement. There is a treasure trove of early 19th Century documents and histories that will be made available to the public soon through this grant. In this era when Black histories are being censured, we are proud to be a part of a project to ensure their longevity and retrievability for our next generations. https://lnkd.in/eC9G-yx7
