Path with Art

We are honored to welcome Candace Jackson to Path with Art's Board of Directors. Candace Jackson is the Chief of Community Engagement at Neighborcare Health. She also serves as the Executive Director of the @Neighborcare Health Foundation. In these roles, she oversees partnerships, grants and fundraising, policy, and communications. Previously she served as Director of Health Justice at Pyramid Communications, leading strategic initiatives for foundations, institutions, and non-profits. She spent nearly a decade at Public Health—Seattle & King County in multiple positions focused on health equity, and co-founded the African American Health Board and the Community Health Board Coalition, a network of 15 ethnically/culturally based community health boards. She also serves as a committee co-chair with the UW’s Center for Antiracism and Community Health.

This just in from the World Health Organization about social prescribing to improve health. "WHO promotes social prescribing to improve health and well-being in the Western Pacific." Since 2008, #PathwithArt (PwA) has been at the forefront of an international movement that uses the arts to bring dignity, awareness, and healing to the complexity of issues surrounding recovery from adversity. Through arts engagements and community building, PwA provides people who have faced significant challenges and mental health issues with opportunities to heal, restore, and flourish. Today on Juneteenth, a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the ending of slavery in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, TX finally learned of their freedom from slavery, Path with Art honors BIPOC community members and the impactful #BlackArtist, Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence was born in 1917 in Atlantic City and died in 2000 in Seattle. He enrolled in his first art classes in the early 1930s. When he was just 23, he had completed five narrative paintings on major historical figures and events in Black history, from Toussaint L’Ouverture to Harriet Tubman. He titled his vibrant paintings with illustrative titles, using simplified, angular figures and forms to create powerful images that characterized his work throughout his career.
