National Homelessness Week 2024: Taking Action Now This week is National Homelessness Week, a time to bring our attention to the wide range of people that are impacted by Homelessness here in Australia. There is an estimated 122,000 individuals who find themselves without a place to call home on any given night. Homelessness is not just the rough sleepers you see out on the streets in the city or in their car, it includes people who are forced to move from one temporary shelter to another, such as emergency accomodation and refuges or people coach surfing. And then there are also the people who live in accomodation that falls below the minimum standards, this can include boarding houses, caravan parks and overcrowded homes. The theme for this year’s Homelessness Week is “Homelessness Action Now,” emphasising the urgent need for solutions to end homelessness. Let’s use this week not just to talk about homelessness but to take concrete steps towards ending it. Whether you’re attending an event, volunteering, or advocating for policy changes, every action counts. One of Dovetail's awesome client's REOM Real Estate of Melbourne has definitely #TakeAction. Teardrops, a #Merseyside homelessness charity faces "imminent closure" due to a "perfect storm" of increased energy bills, wage costs and rent. The St Helens based group helps rough sleepers by providing hot meals, clothing and advice. They also provide local schools with food and uniform for children in need. I wonder how many other small but critical charities are facing the same situation? There were 1,178 overall attendances at Spires from April-June. 266 different people received support from Spires through that period. Here are some of the main outcomes we achieved: 🏠 56 people received housing support - 14 people supported into permanent or temporary accommodation. - 11 people provided with pre-emptive tenancy sustainment support. 👨⚕️ 29 people received health support - 10 people supported to attend a health appointment. - 11 people supported to engage with our Mental health support team. 💷 29 people offered benefits support - 8 people who have started to receive benefits. - 16 people helped to maintain benefits We have raised just over £500 in the first week of our crowdfunding campaign, but we need much more to continue achieving outcomes like these. Expanding Housing First initiatives can significantly support charities like Newbury Soup Kitchen in housing our clients. Housing First offers a pathway to more sustainable outcomes for our clients. Rather than solely providing temporary relief, Newbury Soup Kitchen can collaborate with Housing First programs to facilitate the transition of our clients into permanent housing. This allows us to focus its resources on other essential services, such as providing meals and outreach. Sadly, this service is required now more than ever with the increasing rise in homelessness across England. Through collaboration and a shared commitment to housing as a fundamental human right, Housing First can support our clients find a long-term solution to homelessness. #notjustsoup

Personal post alert... and it is a bit hard hitting ❓ Did you know that the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women... ❔ Homeless people are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. ❓ People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. People have even been set on FIRE. ❔ The statistics show that one third of care leavers become homeless in the first two years immediately after they leave care and 25% of homeless people have been in care at some point in their lives. I am not only a care leaver, but have personally been homeless and at risk of homelessness many times in my younger years – so raising money for this great cause is also somewhat personal. All donations are so very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much I (we) can raise this year! 🙏

  Our news and social feeds are full of economic crisis, war, natural disaster and climate change, and it can all feel very overwhelming can't it? How can I possibly help? Where to start? 👉 There is something you can do on a very local level if you live in Surrey. Just under 1 in 10 Surrey children aged 15 and under are in absolute low income households – this means their families do not have the minimum amount of income needed to meet their basic living requirements. The vast majority of these children have parents in work – but their wages have not kept pace with rising costs. In Surrey this poverty exists in pockets – across the street from others living in very comfortable circumstances. This means it can become invisible to us. Community Foundation for Surrey can ☀ double ☀ your donation at the moment thanks to Surrey County Council who have pledge to match donations – so every £5 becomes £10. We are raising as much money as we can to support local Surrey organisations helping local people who are living in poverty. Last week we awarded another £52,000 to 10 groups supporting people facing food poverty, homelessness and the impact of economic challenge on their health and wellbeing.
