“The Future Directions in Menopause Research: Optimizing Midlife Health of Women Roundtable” is the launch event for NIH’s Women’s Health Roundtable Series on important women’s health topics as part of the White House Women’s Health Research Initiative. This series was developed as a recommended action in response to the Presidential Memorandum to bring attention to priority topics within the Department of Health and Human Services and disseminate information on federally supported research areas. The roundtable series will be led by NIH institute, center, and office leadership and will engage the research community and the public to bring greater awareness to female-specific health conditions (e.g., menopause and endometriosis), as well as diseases and conditions that predominantly affect women (e.g., autoimmune diseases), and present or progress differently in women (e.g., heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.).

I personally think that (especially after a certain one-sided documentary), lack of research is the main reason we are all so grossly uneducated about peri/menopause. Up until very recently, most clinical studies were done on men. We are not little men. Our bodies are different, our brains work differently, work on different levels of hormones, and respond differently, too. We can not have consistent guidelines for both NHS and private healthcare if not all of us understand the science behind the whys and wherefores……. If the vast majority of clinicians aren’t educated in the most up to date information on both the female body and HRT, what hope does the current female population in the country have? A huge amount of misinformation is bandied around. If @bbcpanorama is quoting out of date information and not providing quality unbiased journalism, what hope do 50% of the population in the country have? We have @newsonhealth, we have @menopause_docotor, and quite frankly, I wouldn’t have my brain, body, and career I have now if it weren’t for them. If the funding, education, and clinical trials had been achieved both @newsonhealth and @menopause_doctor wouldn’t be needed……and ironically there wouldn’t be such a strain in the NHS due to cardiovascular disease, dementia, diabetes, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, genital cancers, etc, etc, etc…… Please contact me on 07815611820 if you would like to know the facts from the fiction regarding HRT, if you are unsure if you’re perimenopausal, if you need advice, help and support to cope with this tricky stage of life. A new large-scale study based on the records of 10 million senior Medicare women from 2007 to 2020 suggests that the implications of hormone therapy (HT) use beyond age 65 years vary by types, routes, and dose. · For healthy women with persistent hot flashes, continuing HT beyond age 65 is a reasonable option. · The use of estrogen monotherapy after age 65 was associated with significant risk reductions in mortality, cancer, heart issues, dementia, among others. After the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 2002, many women have resisted taking hormone therapy (HT), especially after age 65 years, because of fears of increased risks for various cancers and heart disease. Despite the conflicting results of a follow-up WHI study in 2004 and dozens of other studies since that time, a percentage of healthcare professionals and their middle-aged female patients continue to believe that HT, especially when taken past the age of 65 years, can increase the occurrence of breast cancer, stroke, and coronary heart disease. Such fears have prevented many menopausal women from getting relief from such symptoms as hot flashes, since HT is today recognized as being the most effective treatment option for managing symptoms associated with the menopause transition. Results of the survey are published online today in Menopause, the journal of The Menopause Society. We are beyond thrilled to see Congress recognize the importance of #OvarianHealth throughout a woman's lifespan in the House Fiscal Year 2025 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations legislation that passed the committee. This milestone is a giant step forward for women's health, unlocking opportunities for research, policy advancements and funding. Our CEO and Founder, Dr. Piraye Beim, has worked as a tireless advocate to educate policy decision-makers on how ovaries impact women’s health far beyond having babies and the transition to #menopause. Years ago, we coined the term "Ovarian Health" to highlight the ovary's impact on #womenshealth. While traditionally associated with just fertility and menopause (even in medical school), the ovary serves a core function essential to the health of the brain, body, and more. Applying this to patient care and health innovation is vital to improving outcomes in everything from maternal health to cardiovascular disease to autoimmune diseases to dementia. Below is the wording that Congress included: Ovarian Health.—The Committee recognizes that ovarian health impacts a woman’s whole health throughout her lifetime, affecting the health of her heart, immune system, metabolic function, among other systems. When ovarian function declines or ceases due to menopause, various medical conditions, or following surgery, women are at increased risks for developing many chronic conditions, including heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia, and autoimmune diseases. Advancing knowledge and research on ovarian health could reduce many of these chronic conditions, especially as women age. Thank you Congress and cheers to women everywhere!

Supporting an Integrated Holistic approach to the menopause to prevent serious long term health risks such as dementia, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes II and more. What are your thoughts?
There is overwhelming data that timely initiation of HRT/MHT (that is within 10 years of menopause) not only improves quality of life but also reduces future major disease including the main cause death in women, which is cardiovascular disease. How long until this data is incorporated into clinical guidelines so that real humans actually benefit? "In conclusion, a large body of randomized trial data converge with results from observational studies, animal studies and basic science supporting that HRT health outcomes vary by time-since-menopause. ..Accordingly, HRT is a sex-specific and time-dependent primary CVD preventive therapy that concomitantly reduces all-cause mortality as well as a diversity of other aging-related diseases with an excellent risk profile. Health-care providers and patients can use the cumulated data in making clinical decisions concerning chronic disease prevention including CVD and downstream reduction in mortality keeping in mind that any prevention strategy must be personalized. Data not only provide strong consistent evidence for beneficial effects of menopausal HRT when initiated close in proximity to menopause but also reassurance of long-term safety. It is time to recognize that HRT reduces all-cause mortality and CVD, and that it is all about timing." A modern paradox in women's health 🤷♀️💡: Despite increasing lifespans, with over 60% of women living to at least 80 years, our healthcare system is faltering in a crucial area—menopause management. The rarity of expertise in menopausal care, a phase that comprises 40% of a woman's life, along with the lingering misinterpretations from the Women's Health Initiative, has created a significant void. As Bluming et al. critically analyze in their 2023 study, the Initiative's implications have been a disservice, fostering a climate of fear and misinformation regarding hormone therapy and breast cancer risk. At W.E, we're committed to informed, specialized care that is reshaping a future where longevity means vitality ✨🌿. Together, we can redefine this significant phase of life, ensuring women are empowered with accurate information and quality healthcare. 🔍 References: Bluming et al. The Unseen Connection: Menopause and Autoimmune Conditions Did you know that the menopausal transition could be a pivotal moment for women's immune health? Recent research reveals a startling connection between perimenopause, menopause, and autoimmunity that demands our attention. Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 26% of women, They represent about 80% of all autoimmune cases. About 13% of these are diagnosed, but due to the difficulty and diversity of symptoms and conditions, the diagnosis is often slow and takes in most cases 5 to 10 years. Conservative estimates suggest that for every diagnosed case, there is at least one undiagnosed case, potentially doubling the actual prevalence to 26%. The menopausal transition emerges as a critical period for autoimmune risk. Research suggests that perimenopause and postmenopause significantly increase the risk of most autoimmune conditions, with the risk increase ranging from about 35% to nearly 200% depending on the specific condition and individual factors such as age at menopause onset. This increased susceptibility isn't limited to a single condition. The hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause and the decline in estrogen levels post-menopause can trigger or exacerbate various autoimmune responses. For women, it's crucial to be aware of this connection. By understanding the intricate interplay between hormonal changes and immune function, we can take preventive measures and better support women's health during these transitional periods, potentially mitigating autoimmune risks through targeted interventions and lifestyle modifications. #menopause #autoimmunity #healthylifestyle

Menopause is one of the only universally experienced life stages among women, yet it remains incredibly misunderstood and neglected by researchers and professionals. What's not talked about enough are the many health issues women can face due to menopause. For example, younger women have half the risk as men for cardiovascular disease, but after menopause, the risk in women is equal to or exceeds the rate of men. Overall, there is a lack of research on women's menopausal health that has led to unnecessary suffering. The Biden administration is taking the first steps to ensure agencies across the federal government are taking the proper steps to better understand women's health through the White House Initiative on Women's Health Research. This new emphasis on women's health research will increase the focus on treatment plans like menopause hormone treatments (MHT) that can be effective for treating menopause and beyond. It's about time our leaders recognize the importance of women's health research, and I hope to see representation within this research so that all women can benefit from its outcomes. #Menopause #WomensHealthResearch

Experienced Director in Philanthropy & Development | Expert in Community Relations & Strategic Partnerships | Driving Impact in Nonprofit Sector
Building on the momentum of recent advancements in women’s health research and policy, I, Suzanne E. Burks, Menopause Champion and President & CEO of ThriveForward Women's Network, am thrilled to witness the transformative steps being taken at the highest levels of government to address the critical gaps in women's health, particularly in the areas of menopause and mental health. The White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research and the Menopause Research and Equity Act of 2023 mark historic milestones in our collective journey toward understanding, acknowledging, and addressing the unique health challenges women face, especially as they navigate the complexities of menopause. At ThriveForward Women's Network, our mission aligns closely with these initiatives as we strive to empower women through education, support, and advocacy, fostering resilience and recovery in every aspect of their lives. We recognize that menopause is not just a medical issue but a societal one, impacting women's mental health, workplace productivity, and overall quality of life. It's time to shatter the silence surrounding menopause, amplifying conversations that lead to action, research, and meaningful change. We applaud the Biden administration and Congress for their commitment to women’s health and eagerly anticipate the outcomes of these initiatives. By collaborating with federal agencies, healthcare professionals, and community organizations, we can ensure that women have the knowledge, care, and support they need to thrive. Let's continue to push boundaries, challenge outdated norms, and create a future where women's health, especially during menopause, is prioritized and protected. Together, we can build a world where every woman's health journey is honored and supported. #EmpowerWomen #MenopauseMatters #ThriveForward
