MattRudd interviews Helen Holmes in this article which explores our current 'rubbish' recycling rates (honourable exemption for Wales!). Helen's research with the #OneBin project shows that consumers usually want to 'do the right thing' but are hampered by inconsistent, confusing or inadequate recycling systems. Goodwill Industries of Alberta’s Repair for Good Program upcycles and refurbishes donated furniture, diverting over 25,000 kg from landfills since 2021, with over 8300 kg diverted in 2023 alone. Backroads Reclamation is turning Old Canadian Wood into new wood products to last another lifetime, saving as much lumber as possible while keeping it from the landfill or bonfire. Violet Grove’s Constructed Floating Wetlands System with Aeration aims to revolutionize #wastewater treatment in colder climates. With a vision to enhance effluent quality and promote environmental sustainability, this initiative introduces innovative natural treatment processes, leveraging the efficacy of wetlands even in cold climate settings. I’m an alternate on the governing board for Chittenden Solid Waste District. They have an impressive network of options to handle our waste and help keep our environment clean. Their annual report describes 309,000 tons of waste from the county’s 169,000 residents and 8,000 businesses. Of that trash, 39% goes to the landfill. Relative to the rest of the US, that’s a good rate, but we could do more, especially related to food waste and composting. Trash data is also a useful economic indicator, as waste matches consumer spending pretty closely. So it might be good news for the local economy, that CSWD showed surprising year-over-year increases in materials handled for each of the most recent six months, August through January.

In honor of July being National Grilling Month, we would like to share some tips on properly disposing of your grilling waste. To prevent trash fires from occurring, allow the coal to cool for at least 48 hours before placing the coal in a metal trash bin. Also, remember not to dispose of propane tanks in the trash or recycling. These tanks must be returned to the appropriate facility for proper disposal. (The number of gallons of gasoline offset by diverting compostables from the landfill) ♻️ 14,537 miles offset! (Your composting efforts are equivalent to not driving 14,537 miles) ♻️ 96 seedlings planted! (Composting has a huge impact on the environment. From a greenhouse gas equivalency standpoint your composting efforts are equivalent to 96 urban tree seedlings grown for 10 years.) ♻️ 4,496 pounds of material from both locations since the beginning of this year to date
