Paul Jenkins’ Post

Last week's announcement by Diageo of a 2,000-bottle consumer trial for their Baileys brand in mini format (80ml) adds to an increasing number of paper bottle trials and pilots in development and in-market. Here are some that we have tracked on ThePackHub's Innovation Zone platform. #packaging #packaginginnovation

Very interesting Paul Jenkins, are any of these curbside recyclable or do they still have to go through a specialty recycling system?

paper bottle, I really have question mark for this kind of package, really sustainable?

I would ne interested in a balanced LCA that also accounts for the loss of short fibres in the paper recycling process versus a plastic alternative and the current fully recyclable glass alternative

Paper probably not the best description of the products and an area of interest for many at present. Will be interesting to see how the products develop as many of those designs are reliant on mixing with other materials to make a funtional product design. Take the tablet bottle as an example it has a metalic, threaded neck for functionality. This makes it a combi product for recycling, thus more expensive & complex presently than a monomaterial to recycle. A space to be watched though as it will develop in the coming years.

Just not sure about these “paper” bottles Paul Jenkins. Will be interesting to see how they apply the EPR fees to these packs. As I understand it they’re essentially composite formats (moulded paper outer, formed thin walled plastic inner). I have a couple I took apart at home in the cupboard (like a true packaging geek 🤓). Is the average householder going to separate the materials??

These concepts are not perfect, but are are wonderful steps in a journey to a perfectly recyclable and recycled packaging. Some consumers do separate before recycling and those that don't, will eventually learn to do so. Until such time, lets support these type of developments and keep encouraging them to develop further till ideal circularity is reached. Thanks for the post Paul!

Interesting to see more brands aim to become more sustainable, and the paths they end up taking to achieve this. Love the kind of design Bailey's is going for. 🙌
