The Jumbos of the 1940s - Douglas Globemaster l The Douglas C-74 Globemaster was a heavy-lift cargo aircraft manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. The aircraft was designed in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which highlighted the need for a military transport aircraft capable of carrying heavy loads across long distances, particularly over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Douglas Aircraft Company responded to this need by designing a four-engined aircraft in 1942. However, the aircraft's first flight was delayed until 5 September 1945 due to development and production issues. Production was eventually limited to 14 aircraft before the contract was canceled following V-J Day. Despite the limited production, the C-74 proved to be a valuable long-range strategic airlifter, and its successor, the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, was used by the Air Force for many years. 42-65413 C-74 Globemaster l USAF, 1950, Zoggavia Collection https://lnkd.in/d6S7HXzG #classicaviation #aviationphoto #aviationphotography #militaryaviation #stockphotos #kodak #slides #aviationgeek #usairforce #zoggavia #douglas #globemaster

My Dad flew the Globemaster I. When he passed, I donated a bunch of photos to the USAF Museum as they have virtually no displays about it.
