The Jumbos of the 1940s - Douglas Globemaster l The Douglas C-74 Globemaster was a heavy-lift cargo aircraft manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. The aircraft was designed in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which highlighted the need for a military transport aircraft capable of carrying heavy loads across long distances, particularly over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Douglas Aircraft Company responded to this need by designing a four-engined aircraft in 1942. However, the aircraft's first flight was delayed until 5 September 1945 due to development and production issues. Production was eventually limited to 14 aircraft before the contract was canceled following V-J Day. On this day in 1909, the United States Army Signal Corps acquired the Wright Flyer, marking the first aircraft in the US military's inventory as Signal Corps Airplane No. 1. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) operated the Hawker Sea Fury, with the first 25 RAN Sea Fury’s being embarked in HMAS Sydney in April 1949 and allocated to 805 Squadron. The carrier sailed for Australia in mid-April 1949 and arrived in Sydney in late May. Further batches of Sea Fury’s were delivered to the RAN in December 1950, October 1951, March 1952, January 1953, and January 1954. The Sea Fury was a significant part of the RAN’s Fleet Air Arm, with the type serving until the mid-1950s when it was phased out of service and replaced by the jet engine De Havilland Sea Venom. On 17 November 2021, Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II ZM152 (BK-18) of Royal Air Force (RAF) 617 Squadron, crashed into the eastern Mediterranean, during take off from HMS Queen Elizabeth. As the ship sailed past the wreckage before it sank, an intake blank was seen to float free. Was the loss of this £181.1 million fighter simply because ‘someone’ was negligent or incompetent? Man-carrying under-wing pods. The exint pod was a design for a man-carrying, under-wing pod capable of being fitted to the underwing weapons pylons on military fast-jets and military helicopters. The concept was conceived by the former Acton, London based aircraft consultancy AVPRO U.K. Ltd as a method of inserting and extracting special forces operatives. According to Flight International magazine, in the late 1990s the UK Defence Evaluation and Research Agency test fitted a prototype pod to a Bae Sea Harrier at its Boscombe Down research facility. On the night before D-Day, more than 23,000 paratroopers from American and British divisions boarded C-47s. These troops were dropped behind enemy lines to secure strategic targets. Despite bad weather and anti-aircraft fire, the C-47s successfully delivered the paratroopers to their landing zones. The C-47 was also the backbone of the Allied military airlift during World War II. It could carry up to 6,000 pounds of cargo over long distances. More than 10,000 C-47s were built, serving with the Army Air Forces, U.S. Navy, and Royal Air Force.
