Lonely- Critical - Connection - words we hear very often these days. What I've learned through the process of multiple placemaking initiatives is that public space is sometimes the antithesis of public space. Partnerships are sometimes not aligned, creating more space for "I'd never go there" because you don't feel welcome- or safe - or maybe you know you're taking part in something that quickly became unregulated gentrification. What I've also learned and strive to articulate is the power behind public placemaking when communities do it with the municipality supporting them - no matter how big or small, it's transformative. When activated intentionally, it is somewhere people are reborn, find refuge, or can convey/respond authentically to others around them they may not know. It's a place for multi-faceted artists to bring their messages and speak freely about the social changes we can create worldwide. #loneliness #mentalhealth #placemaking #workforcedevelopment #artists #socialchange #strategy #collaboration #publicspace #communityengagement
Thrilled to announce the publication of my Master’s Capstone, "Public Space: The Critical Connection in a Sometimes Lonely City," in Columbia University Academic Commons. This study investigates the relationship between public space features and visitors' social connections and levels of loneliness. My research focused on four pedestrian plazas and four community gardens in New York City, involving collecting public space public life data, conducting a field survey with over 180 visitor respondents, and engaging in interviews with 15 public space managers and designers. Seven key findings regarding public space governance structure, programming, stewardship, openness, physical features, locality, and seasonality are outlined in this study. These insights provide considerations for different stakeholders, including public space planners and designers, researchers, and city governments.
