We exist in a world with material limits. And those limits are labelled as crises—social, spatial, political, environmental, knowledge production; the human experience itself. And because the city is a synthesis of values concerning the collective imagination, then imagining the city otherwise appears to be an urgent task. The problem today is that the collective imagination is focused on consumption: commodification, consumerism, self-interest, privatization, spectacle. What is collectively considered appropriate has become thoughtless. Collective imagination is reduced to questions of style and weakened levels of critical engagement in processes that have real impact on our lives. The central challenge is to think and act differently. An “analogue city” is a creative process with a surreal basis. Starting from realistic elements of the city based on memory — the experienced city, the critical potential of the analogical city provides the conditions to discover reasons and analogics other than those of consumption. The challenge then becomes making real space for those ideas. Finding the right time + place. Can't overstate the significance and/or timeliness of the University presence in Surrey. Their collective imagination will ultimately write the future history of City Centre. #Kwantlen Polytechnic University #Simon Fraser University #The University of British Columbia

Action-oriented innovator. Supporting public sector organizations and communities navigate climate politics through transformative civic participation practices.
Are we in a unique a window of possibilities? Will we seize it? A long but exciting day that started with UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) friends and colleagues in discussions with a few cities that have adopted hugely ambitious goals that are now delivering impactful change and closed with an event at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) exploring how devolution might be shaped to empower overburdened and disadvantaged communities. A few initial reflections: ⏳ Local governments increasingly recognise they need new capabilities to meet society’s challenges and are proactively investing in their organisations and staff to meet the moment. Good work being by Oriol Estela Barnet and Irene Navarro Solé at Pla Estratègic Metropolità de Barcelona (PEMB). 🚧 After over a decade of austerity and our culture war politics, a growing movement of civil servants recognises the need to move away from ‘bureaucratic cultures’ and towards ‘relational cultures’ (thanks Osian Jones!). ⚡️The role of civil servants matters more today than even. This is the moment where civil servants need to take risks and be bold, not retreat into the shadows where their potential for public impact is minimised. Inspiring, practical stories from Almira Lardizabal Hussain and Tim Rettler from GLA and Robyn Smith from Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Looking forward to more learning over the next few days and taking this inspiration back to Oregon Department of Environmental Quality!

Our recent event took a deep dive into London's life science and innovation clusters, for what we believe was the city's first built environment life science event under the new Labour government. Our ‘stellar’ panel - which included Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, Howard Dawber, and industry experts Sue Foxley (Bidwells), Olaide Oboh (Socius ), and Paul Bailey (LS Estates ) - compared the city's emerging clusters to an interconnected 'galaxy'. With support from the panel, we explored how the industry's 'lift off' can benefit local communities and shore up the UK's position as a life science and tech superpower. Some key takeaways from the session: - Collaboration is key: More 'mission-led' approaches across public, private and third sectors are required - Embrace the next generation: Demystifying life sciences for school leavers will pave the way for the future workforce - A race for space: The industry needs to invest in the development of new spaces, the communities around them and the people that will work in them, to meet the goal of 7 million sq ft of life science space in London by 2030 Don’t overlook communities: The sector must deliver meaningful social impact which delivers real clout for communities A huge thanks to our panel and to those who attended.
