Inter-regional Adviser in Least Developed Countries, UNITED NATIONS DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS
Reflecting on this policy brief and the three key findings made me realize that Pacific Islanders critically thinking about these issues need to voice our thoughts on what is best for us as a Pacific people. Not just think them but voice them - with sophistication and eloquence. To speak for ourselves rather than others speaking for us or on behalf of us. The key findings of this brief made me critically ask, “Should there even be competition for space in the development landscape in the Pacific?” There is a lot to do - enormity of many gaps - social, economic, environment, infrastructure including in the supply and provision of basic utilities such as access to undisrupted clean drinking water. These could benefit from development partners’ assistance. If traditional partners are assisting the Pacific island countries based on the Pacific island countries’ priorities at national and regional level, then there is tremendous space for emerging development partners like China, etc. to find a meaningful role and place. Complementarity rather than competition should be the modus operandi. Harmonization by development partners of their development assistance is in the spirit of the principles of development cooperation. Perhaps that should happen before entering the Pacific rather than taking more of the already limited headspace of Pacific policymakers in managing undesirable competition and behavior of traditional and new development partners. https://lnkd.in/e2V3hgYj

In our sector -- #internationaldevelopment and #humanitarianassistance -- we spend a lot of time talking about risks, opportunities, trends, drivers... I am sure you've heard and re-heard them. But we rarely, if ever, have consensus about a top trend that will affect us all. What is the top trend you're preparing for? #trends2024 #2024outlook #humanitarianaid #strategicplanning #strategicinsights #ceomindset
