Jetoptera, a U.S.-based aerial mobility startup, has partnered with UAE Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company, Eanan Al Samma, to commence a joint flight test campaign for their subscale, box-wing VTOL J-500 autonomous aircraft. This innovative project is set to revolutionize the UAV market in the UAE. The J-500 VTOL cargo UAV, co-developed by the two companies, aims to perfect automated transitions to and from forward flight. This subscale model is powered by Jetoptera’s unique Fluidic Propulsive System™ and features electric ducted fans for propulsion, achieving a maximum speed of 200 knots and carrying payloads up to 50 kg. “The goal of the campaign is to further integrate the J-series flight controls to develop the autopilot and navigation system for the larger J-500 UAV. The aim is to address the UAE market,” the press release states. The subscale aircraft operates in automated mode, handling VTOL, hover, and transitions without pilot intervention. Missions are uploaded to the onboard control system, executing the entire mission autonomously. The tests have shown excellent automated conversions from hover to forward flight and vice versa, showcasing the hover maneuverability of the aircraft. Dr. Andrei Evulet, CEO of Jetoptera, emphasized the significance of this milestone: “Our collaboration has reached an important milestone for automated VTOL flights in the UAE. The first flights of our J-series have started the development of the controls and avionics for the larger version. Using the subscale aircraft at the location, we are collecting important flight data that is instrumental for the development and validation of the avionics planned for the FPS-powered vehicle. The partnership allows Jetoptera to accelerate its roadmap for the introduction of the larger J-series air taxis, on location, and under the unique local conditions, where the primary market target will be.” The campaign is taking place at the Xrange test field near Abu Dhabi and will continue over the coming months. Multiple automated missions have been conducted, including vertical take-off, hover, transitions, horizontal flight, vertical landing, and endurance tests. Malaysia And China Explores UAV Technology Collaboration Malaysia is advancing in the field of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology through a collaborative effort with China, deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. The partnership, spearheaded by MARA Aerospace & Technologies Sdn Bhd and China’s Honeycomb Aerospace Technologies (Beijing) Co Ltd, is aimed at sharing expertise and developing UAV technology locally. Zahid also highlighted the significant opportunities it will provide for both the local UAV industry and Malaysia’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector. A key aspect of the partnership is the transfer of technology from China, which is expected to benefit Malaysian TVET students, especially those studying at the University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL). Zahid noted that the knowledge gained through this collaboration will equip students with the skills to build UAVs, giving them a competitive edge in the growing field of UAV technology. UAVs, with their advanced capabilities, will play a crucial role in enhancing border security and agricultural efficiency. “This technology will change the landscape of how we operate, not just in security but also in agriculture,” he said. The partnership was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mara Aerospace & Technologies and Honeycomb Aerospace Technologies. As part of this agreement, the latter will invest RM100 million to establish a UAV manufacturing facility in Malaysia, with operations expected to begin in 2025. Another engine, another milestone for Sky Power International! Both the SP-110 FI TS and SP-210 FI TS have completed the industry known bench mark for endurance and reliability....the FAR33 test! For those that are not in the know-how, this is the high stress running profile as laid out by the Federal Aviation Administration's airworthiness standards for endurance, of up to 150hours of operation. These two engines were operated for 8 hours per day, until the prescribed 150hours was achieved. At the end of the daily test cycles, the engines were subjected to an inspection based on a checklist in order to detect changes at an early stage, document them and rectify them if necessary. India's Quest for Self-Reliance in Defence is still a dream...? Nahh It's happening...! . . . With a mix of pride and reflection, I want to delve into a recent development that has sparked discussions about India's journey towards self-sufficiency in defence technology—Four of our very own Tapas drone is acquired by Indian Navy! This achievement isn't just about cutting-edge UAV capability; it's a testament to our nation's grit and innovation. Inspired by the MQ-9 Reaper, Tapas took flight after years of hard work by our DRDO heroes, from its inception in 2010 to its first flight in 2016. This bird measures 31 feet long, boasts a wingspan of 67 feet, and packs a punch with a 350 kg payload. It's our new sentinel, flying up to 30,000 feet for over 24 hours, keeping watch over our borders and the vast Indian Ocean. But it's not just about numbers and tech specs— India's aspirations to replace its ageing UAV fleet through the DRDO's TAPAS project were ambitious, aiming to showcase our technological prowess and bolster national security. However, setbacks in meeting specifications and timelines have prompted questions (I was also do it) about our path to self-reliance. This event is not just an answer to those questions. It's about showcasing our capability to innovate and create advanced defence tech right here at home. It's about reducing our dependence on imports and securing our nation with our own ingenuity. Sure, we've had our challenges—like skill shortages and limited private sector involvement. But here's the exciting part where Dronacharya Tech-Hub is contributing by ramping up drone project-based learning, we're gearing up for even faster growth. Imagine schools and colleges buzzing with students learning the ins and outs of UAVs, hands-on. That's how we nurture the next generation of drone wizards who'll take India's UAV game to new heights. So here's to our scientists, engineers, and leaders who made Tapas a reality.
