🌈RIP🌈 Sharing my story gives me a higher survival rate. Pledges will help attract a rescue. Rescues cannot intake animals without fosters. A1923842 Located At: BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description: My name is Jonas. I am a male, black and white Labrador Retriever mix. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 2 years old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since Feb 18, 2024. I am in kennel DD41. https://lnkd.in/gdVK-BWS Heartworm Status: NEGATIVE SHELTER NOTES 02/23/24 12:48 Standing at front of kennel with wagging tail but once kennel door was opened was cowering, tail tucked while leashing. Once leashed walked out with tail down and scurrying walk. Quiet in runs, walking around, sniffing other dogs and sitting around. Back inside kennel was snarling, lunging and forward barking when I and other staff passed by; other times he stood on all fours with wagging tail quietly. A couple times I would pass, and he was lunging then a couple minutes later pass again and he stood wagging tail. There was not anything consistent about what he was barking or calm towards (e.g. walking other dogs or direction I was walking from or holding anything in my hands) and he received treats every time I passed. Behavior unpredictable. Leashed for PM walk, he was cowering as I placed leash on him but once it was on walked with high flag tail, alternating between stiff wagging and loose wagging, fast walk next to me. Sat at back of run watching cars driving by on the grass. When I entered kennel he scurried in wide circle around me, ears back, whale eyes and lip licking. I sat on the bench, and he circled back towards me, climbed up onto the bench next to me. I leashed and he walked with wagging flag tail inside. Once back inside kennel, was forward barking, but this time able to redirect him with kibble soaked in chicken broth. Please contact BARC if you can help! They cannot assist out of state adoption or foster offers. Feeling stuck in your job and not sure what to do next? Volunteer work can help! It’s a great way to dip your toes into something new without making any big commitments or career changes you’re not ready for yet. Volunteering lets you explore different areas, develop new skills, and see what truly lights you up. It'll give you the opportunity to build some awesome case studies that you can add to your resume and LinkedIn if you decide it’s a path you want to follow professionally. You could try getting involved with a local animal shelter if you're passionate about animal welfare and want to explore working in that space 🐾 Or, if you’re interested in event planning, you could volunteer with a local community group to help organise their next fundraiser. These experiences give you a chance to develop practical skills and see what working in those fields is really like. At the end of the day, whether you decide that it's a career option you'd like to pursue or not, you'll learn something about yourself and feel great about giving back! #CareerGrowth #ExploreNewPaths #GiveBack #VolunteerExperience #FindYourPassion

CEO - Institute of Canine Psychotherapy, PhD Animal Cognition, Leadership (courses). Canine Psychotherapist (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, 3 decades), Author, Podcast Host. Psych. Today Mag, Roku TV, LA Times.
NOTE: DOG WAS KILLED. Question - Would a different "Behavior Note/Assessment" had made a difference? Pls respond respectfully in comments. Pls read my notes below and the original post first. Thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dissecting "Behavioral Notes" can be challenging. Including as much info in posts helps dogs get out of shelters. Behavioral notes are important, and kudos to this shelter for including them. BEHAVIOR NOTE: Fearful body language in kennel. Ran to the back of kennel facing the wall trying to hide as I entered the kennel. I leashed him and he slowly walked out the kennel with tense body and tail tucked. He began to freeze as we entered the hallway, and I carried him to the kennel. What does this mean to potential rescuers/adopters? The body language and the description may portray Marvin as a nervous dog, but is he? Marvin is lucid, so the fact he is uncomfortable indicates he is out of his "common element", meaning he was most likely in a home. Although clearly uncomfortable, he did not bite or fight. He processed his options and made good decisions. Since the attendant was able to leash him, he probably knows what a leash is (good sign). Walking out slowly with tail tucked is indicative of not knowing where he is going, and "freezing" is a sign of wanting to process his surroundings before proceeding (a positive cognitive function). The fact the attendant could pick him up should be considered positive, although it would be more informative, and more comfortable for Marvin, had he been given the opportunity to make that decision on his own. Assessing behavior in a shelter situation can be challenging. The dogs are out of their element, the staff is short on time (commonly), and the shelter system does not teach or employ programs proven effective in assessing and working with dogs over the age of six months. Applying cognitive inducing exercises encourage trust and a bond, and they are not challenging - in fact, they can be applied in a shelter situation. By applying these exercises, they can actually reduce the time it takes to get dogs like Marvin out of the cell, and decrease physical exertion for the attendant. The assessment and integration program I developed and have applied for decades is proven to prevent confusion and anxiety, increase bond, and allow for accurate assessments, thus improving adoption rates. Thank you for supporting Marvin, and I truly hope he finds the loving family he deserves. And, again, kudos to the shelter for giving him a chance. The roles and expectations of animal services is changing - and for the better. This is a great article about the changes taking place in Victoria, TX. In Victoria, officers are shifting from a punitive mindset -- where ticket writing was a major function of their work - to the "ice cream truck mentality" where they go into neighborhoods and try to help people with their pets. They're also spending more time per call -- which gives them an opportunity to really connect with their community in a positive way. Additionally, when they find free roaming dogs in the field, they try to find where they live first vs taking directly to the shelter. This allows them to connect with owners and talk to them about the dangers of just allowing their dogs to roam free. They're also spending a lot of their community time on spay & neuter education for their community. Great article and great work by Mark Sloat. Articles like this are essential to let people know not only the changes that are being made -- but why they are important -- and help get community buy in. https://lnkd.in/eP5WkUsV
