Within the first few months of working on an MMC for housing the organisation PLACE (Pan-London Accommodation Collaborative Enterprise) held a session to look at how "meanwhile" sites could be used to generate a semi-temporary solution for those in immediate and dire needs of a home.
it generated ideas of how using MMC deliverables the opportunity was there to have fast-built, pre-fabricated homes on brownfield or sites that had major developments planned but would be "on-hold" for the next 5 years. Ideas of a compulsory rental order could be applied to any developer that could be deemed to be land banking.
Ways in which an MMC stockpile could be allocated and shared across local authorities to rent (at much less costs then the temporary accommodation "solution" of hotels (term used loosely), B&B's or private landlords that councils pay non-returning monies out to) and enable a quality and controlled housing supply.
At a point the rental money would have paid the margins, and profits, on the MMC deliverables and the stockpile would be owned by a shared scheme of UK local authorities that could re-use the stock as required.
In exploring this idea I touched base with a friend that worked with the homeless to really understand what those in need of "temporary" accommodation really went through (Justlife Foundation) and meeting staff that worked with the homeless day in and day out.
The research was eye opening and then I really understood what the real housing crisis was about. Through Justlife Foundation I was introduced to Oasis Community Housing where their CEO David Smith took me to visits sites and the means that they use to help with the homeless on a more eye widening tour.
Since that day I try to "do my bit" with some fund raising and the Oasis Community Housing have provided me with the amazing opportunity to run the Great North Run a few times. What an experience and such a welcoming city and people - Hazel Ditchburn MCIOF (Cert) and Joanne Armstrong (MCIOF).
I saw this post from the Oasis Community Housing today and thought "what can my kids do to help" so have challenged them to find 4 friends each and undertake a "do as your parents say" day. If they successfully "obey" then at the end of that day they will be rewarded with £10. With all 10 completing the task that will raised the £100. It's not quite the £100 in 100 days but it can help.
For all those in my network working for solutions to the housing crisis perhaps you can challenge yourselves, your family and friends to see what they can do to raise £100.
I would be grateful to anyone who reads this to re-post in your network.
I'll still keep plugging away on the ideas of how we in this industry can make that difference and I am sure one day we will. Till then any small amount of monies raised for charities like the Oasis Community Housing can go a long way to help.
Many thanks.

🌟 As we find ourselves in the heart of National Volunteer Month, I'm reminded of the beautiful truth: when we align ourselves with a mission, we inherently commit to making the world a better place.
Consider for a moment the quiet power of a helping hand extended to a neighbor in need, the warmth of a smile shared at a local shelter, or the sense of purpose found in championing causes close to our hearts. These simple yet profound acts of service form the very foundation of positive change.
Dr. Joe Dispenza reminds us that, "When you're in service to a mission or a purpose, you're committed to changing the world for the better. And that can happen on the scale of your world - your family; your company; your community."
My passion for serving others is an intrinsic part of who I am. It resides at the very core of my being, shaping my values, guiding my actions, and defining my purpose. I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference, to leave a lasting impact on the world.
Together, let's redefine the possibilities of service. Let's embrace the transformative power of collective action and uplift our communities, one act of kindness at a time. 🌍✨

Gianna Leider is igniting a passion for service in the future leaders of volunteerism, motivating them to contribute to their communities. Whether it's through volunteering or as a part-time summer employee, she's a source of positive light and inspiration for staff and students in JA BizTown and our summer camps. ❤️
1. What has volunteering and working at JA taught you? "It has taught me how important it is to understand the basics of business and money. It's something that is so overlooked in our education system and should be taught more often."
2. What is one financial concept you think people your age need to understand more? "Budgeting! As a teenager, it's easy to spend money on non-necessities and not save. Going to college is an expensive event in your life and I think it's super important to acknowledge that and start saving early."
3. What are you most looking forward to about college? "Meeting new people who share similar interests but also being able to pursue my career aspirations."
4. What is your favorite JA memory? "Spirit week at Summer Camp!"
5. Anything else you'd like to share? "JA Summer Camp has created so many memories that I'll cherish forever and it is an opportunity you can't pass up."
Thank you, Gianna, for being a shining example of a student volunteer! We know you will be a smashing success in all you do! 👏🌟

Thank you so much for giving up your time to support young people, Marta!
We were fortunate to have you representing HUT Architecture as well as colleagues from ZeroAvia and Piercy&Company teaching students who were super engaged with learning more about #employabilityskills and #careerpathways
Showing representation and sharing information is incredibly important to continue improving equity for people from under-represented groups, as in this interesting article that highlights statistics about young people studying architecture from areas of low representation: https://lnkd.in/ezz5mjrQ
This week I had the opportunity of volunteering for Inspire Education Business Partnership, facilitating a 'You're Hired!' careers workshop with Year 10 students at Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy.
HUT Architecture have been volunteering for INSPIRE for some years now, and I was excited to take part in a school local to me in Hackney.
Along with my fellow volunteers, we spoke with students about job applications, CVs and interviews. It was such a pleasure to work with such interested and engaged young people. Many thanks to Anne-Marie Greenland for organising - would encourage others to look for future volunteering activities on INSPIRE's website: https://lnkd.in/erJtJDyZ
My advice to future volunteers: If you don’t enjoy your volunteer experience, it’s OK to explore more options. The more you try, the more you know about yourself. Open your mind when you volunteer (very much the same with the job market!)

One thing to keep in mind as you are building out your volunteer programs is that volunteers are individuals who volunteer with their goals in mind. Yes, they want to give back and serve their community, but they do have personal goals.
✔ Some have retired and are looking for ways to stay active.
✔ Some people may be dealing with stressful home environments and want to escape just for a few hours.
✔ Some may have relocated and are looking for a community to build relationships with others.
✔ Some are looking to apply for a professional organization and need the service on their resume.
✔ Some may be stay-at-home mothers who are stir-crazy being in the house with toddlers and just need to experience adult presence.
✔ Some are empty nesters with extra time to devote their skills, gifts, and talents.
✔ Some are widows who need to revisit what life looks like after a spouse passes away.
The reasons vary greatly.
It's on your organization to create a culture and environment where these individuals can meet their personal goals. Your opportunities should have depth, value, and meaning so that the volunteer can walk away feeling as if their contribution to your organization was a major gift of time.
