What do you do when your capability has outgrown your role and there doesn’t seem to be an opportunity for advancement? More than ever, professionals across industries are hitting a career ceiling for a multitude of reasons, from economic constraints to weak leadership to bias. As we move through the long tail of the great resignation, these same professionals are reskilling, building new networks and re-evaluating their priorities. If this is you, here are five things to consider: ✨ Identify champions – whether these are mentors you can learn from, or cheerleaders who can profile you, focus on adding supporters to your network. ✨ Be honest about your ambitions – vocalise your desire to learn and grow, create a structured development plan and work towards it. ✨ Demonstrate leadership – formal and informal leadership skills are critical in the modern workplace. There’s one person who can change the trajectory of your corporate career if you find them. …A sponsor. Don’t confuse this with a mentor. Both are critical but serve different functions: A mentor provides guidance, advice, and support based on their own experiences. They act as a coach and a sounding board. A sponsor, however, is someone in a position of power who uses their positional capital to advocate for your career advancement within the organization. Their primary purpose is to help you obtain high-visibility projects, promotions, or positions. This relationship is often more strategic and often less personal. It is based on the sponsor’s belief that you’re capable and deserve advancement. Here are 5 easy ways to secure a sponsor: 1. Identify Potential Sponsors: Look for leaders within your organization who have the clout and respect to influence others. They should be individuals who are invested in fostering talent and have a track record of supporting others' growth. 2. Build Your Reputation: Create a personal brand that speaks to your unique strengths and professional accomplishments. Make sure your work is visible to those in positions of influence. 3. Network Strategically: Engage with senior leadership through company events, meetings, and professional groups. Take on projects or roles that will increase your interaction with potential sponsors. 4. Articulate Your Ambitions: Be clear about your career goals and the value you bring. When you have the opportunity, express your aspirations in a way that aligns with the company's objectives and shows your potential contribution to its success. 5.
