As we’re coming to the end of this Pride Month, I wanted share some thoughts. Above all I’m here to learn how I can best support my LGBTIQ+ colleagues. 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 And this was a key focus of our recent leadership panel discussion on allyship. During this session, we discussed topics including the needs of colleagues in different regions, the importance of psychological safety, and how to drive tangible action on LGBTIQ+ inclusion.   One action we’ve taken recently is reaffirming our commitment to the LGBTIQ+ Standards of Conduct for Business by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).   In line with this commitment, it’s my goal to ensure that the voices of LGBTIQ+ colleagues are heard, that their needs are addressed, and that everyone can be their authentic selves. Not just in Pride Month, but all year round.   I want to be a CEO of a company where everybody feels they can be themselves. Where you can be ‘you’, and where we are united for progress — creating a safe space for all, celebrating diversity, and staying curious about each other’s experiences. Pride Month may be over, but this is where the real work begins! 🌈💕 Recognise that our responsibility to be true allies to the LGBTIQ+ community needs to continue every day. Here are four steps we can take to be better allies: 1️⃣ Educate Ourselves: Continuously learn about LGBTIQ+ issues, histories, and experiences. Knowledge is the foundation of understanding and empathy. 2️⃣ Speak Up: Challenge discriminatory comments and behaviours when we see them. Silence can be perceived as complicity. 3️⃣ Support LGBTIQ+ Voices: Amplify the voices of LGBTIQ+ individuals and support their initiatives. Representation matters. 4️⃣ Create Safe Spaces: Foster environments where everyone feels safe to express themselves authentically, whether at work or in our communities. Let's commit to these actions and ensure that our colleagues, friends, and family from the LGBTIQ+ community are heard, feel safe, and can hold hands in public without shame. 💘 #LGBTIQ+ #TalentQuarter #Inclusion

Great to see the Pride flag flying at Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) this month. Why is this important you ask? Flying a Pride flag at work is important for several reasons: Inclusivity and Visibility: Displaying Pride flags creates a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that celebrates diversity. These vibrant symbols help LGBTQ+ employees feel seen, validated, and proud of their identities. Support and Recognition: The rainbow flag represents support, respect, and recognition for those who have faced discrimination due to their sexual identities. By flying the flag, companies reinforce their commitment to humanity and equality for all. Encouraging Authenticity: Celebrating Pride at work encourages everyone, LGBTQIA+ or not, to bring their whole selves to the workplace. It fosters an environment where different voices and lived experiences are valued, promoting true inclusion. Ultimately, celebrating Pride at work goes beyond superficial gestures—it’s about creating a workplace where everyone feels accepted and empowered. I once had a colleague shyly tell me his partner was a man. At first, I was taken aback— “erm it’s more than just Drag Race, I'm an ally!" But then, I felt sad for him. How many people had he been nervous to tell before me? We were just casually talking about weddings. A recent Stonewall report found that many LGBTQIA employees don't feel safe being open about their identity at work. In celebration of Pride Month, let's discuss the importance of inclusive workplaces. While many businesses champion their LGBTQIA employees others still face discrimination and bullying. Challenges are even greater for Black, Asian, minority ethnic, trans and disabled LGBTQIA staff, with trans employees six times more likely to face physical attacks than their LGB peers. However, progress is possible. Today, we’re spreading awareness about issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and calling for everyone to make changes that create safer and more inclusive workplaces. Here are a few things you can do starting TODAY: Address employees by their preferred pronouns. Promote/celebrate diversity initiatives and events like Pride events, awareness days, etc. Create safe spaces by displaying LGBTQIA+ inclusive signage. (Can your washrooms be gender neutral?) Reword website copy to be inclusive of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. Look at your Anti-Discrimination policies and ensure they’re being followed. There is a lot of work left to do, but it is important that we continue to strive to create workplaces that are safe for ALL individuals!

As Pride month comes to a close, let’s reflect on the importance of inclusivity in the workplace. We’re committed to ensuring the values we celebrate during Pride Month - diversity, acceptance and equality, are upheld every day of the year. Pride Month reminds us of the progress we’ve made and the work that still needs to be done. It’s a time to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ colleagues, friends and community members, and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.
