The Cornell University Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Symposium this week has been full of insights and ideas that have been so helpful! Key takeaways include the importance of leaders at all levels being intentional and authentic when including everyone and making them feel valued members of the team. Connecting with people around the world and sharing successes and best practices is a great way to advance ideas of inclusion!

The 4th annual Diversity Summit at The College of New Jersey took place today. There was a lot to learn from the corporate representatives and staff who attended. We discussed how #inclusiveenvironments impact individual employees and entire organisations as a whole. I learned a lot about #workculture, #leadership, and commonly underappreciated aspects of #professionaldevelopment. Today is Day One of #ConstructionInclusionWeek! Construction Inclusion Week is designed to build awareness of the need to improve the culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the construction industry. This effort requires commitment from leadership and accountability from all of us. Today, we dive into the theme of Commitment and Accountability. To fully realize a culture of inclusion and belonging requires both leadership commitment and accountability to ourselves and each other. Neither leadership nor accountability are top-down but shared responsibilities that we, regardless of title, can actively demonstrate. We all have a part to play, whether in the field or the office. Each of us has a vital role in making our workplace more welcoming. All of us are leaders, modeling the behavior we want to see in others, influencing others toward the goal of a more inclusive society, and holding ourselves and others accountable to actions that help inspire and achieve that vision. It's #ConstructionInclusionWeek and NEII and our members are proud to participate! Day 1: Commitment and Accountability. Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion means we all have a part to play. All of us can model the behavior we want to see in others and influence others towards the goal of a more inclusive society. A commitment to inclusive leadership includes: an investment in positive working relationships with all team members, recognition of contributions large and small, empathy and the openness to receive feedback and opinions from your team. Eliminate these behaviors from your workplace to foster inclusion: ridicule, lack of active listening, gossip and rumors, excessive competition, and micromanagement.

A puzzle is made up of many pieces, each with its own unique shape and colour. Every piece is essential to complete the picture. Similarly, think of our world as a vast, intricate puzzle. Each of us represents a distinct piece, and it's only by valuing every single piece that we can see the full picture. This is the essence of diversity and inclusion, beautifully articulated by my colleague Mary Carey.
