How the UE PEF methodological framework (according to the PEFCR Apparel & Footwear) measures the significant environmental impact of fast fashion practices: 👕An example of a T-shirt. The impact of a T-shirt resulting from fast fashion practices can be 70% higher than that of other T-shirts from more sustainable practices (according to realistic parameters of materials, production conditions and different durability).📉 The study carried out by Glimpact, thanks to its Global Impact Score application, highlights the fact that the environmental impact of a T-shirt must be considered in its entirety, including considering the weight, the material, production conditions, and durability, in order to realistically characterize the environmental footprint of the business practices of the fashion industry. 🌱 Looking only at the choice of materials can not define a product as sustainable or fast fashion. 🧵 Each element, from the selection of fibers to logistics, shapes the overall sustainability of a product. Finally, it is essential to compare the impacts per day of wear⌚ to reflect the durability of the product. The key point? ✅ The choice of raw materials is not the only determinant of the environmental impact of a product. The entire value chain of a product must be taken into account to compare their impacts and thus define "responsible" business practices. I remember when "sustainable fashion" people were shocked that clothing rental subscription and preloved resale were called out as being anything but sustainable. They just fuel human desire for the novel. But now we understand the scale of the new problem which Vinted et al. are creating. Millions of #fastfashion items are on the platforms: old clothes being sold at knock-down prices to fund the purchase of new. And the purchasers of the preloved feel able to wear an item just once before jettisoning, "because it was super cheap and someone wore it before." When I set up Circular Fashion Initiative three years ago, I was naïve about how much effort it would take to turn the garment industry around. I was stupidly aiming too low. Since that time the footwear industry has progressed massively in its way of thinking (will take 5-10 years to get everything into practice), but the garment industry thinking is as infantile and "business as usual" as ever. I see no hope when the vast majority cannot see beyond the status quo (recycling polyester 🤷🏻♂️). I may throw the preloved towel in, when it comes to garments.

The recent Environmental Audit Committee sitting on sustainable fashion was excruciatingly painful to watch. At the core of fashion's intransigence to shift towards a responsible industry is the fallacy of circularity. Indeed, one of the members of the committee made a pertinent observation when he asked "What are those involved in recycling actually trying to recycle the clothing back into?" of course more fibers whether by mechanical or chemical processes, which by the way require not just intensive capital investment, increased energy use and on top of it an endless stream of raw materials - more and more of dirt cheap ultra-fast fashion goods. If the demise of ReNewCell has taught us anything at all. And then there's the guiltless schemes of up-cycling, buying cheap on Shein & selling on Vinted et al., a paradoxical carousel of 'circular economy.' We simply can't bring ourselves to the realization that the behemoth dinosaur of an industry that produces over 92 million tonnes of waste annually simply has to go! and until we address the root causes, which is unbridled consumerism, corporate greed and the obnoxious repugnant concept of planned obsolescence, fashion will persist as a leading catalyst of an apocalyptic future.
