I love Halloween. I think it's my favourite holiday. Why, you might ask? It's the only modern holiday where the quality of your community matters more than the quality of your close relations. It's the day when children bring joy to elderly neighbours, when we get to see other people out on the street in a meaningful way, and where the casual hellos fostered by a "trick-or-treat" strengthen our ties. But Halloween also exposes just how much we've prioritized the movement of people in cars over the safety of children. Every year, Halloween brings the highest number of pedestrian fatalities that are children in a single day. (https://lnkd.in/gJsCQ55h) It's not enough to ask people to slow down or require kids to have reflective costumes - it's time to start taking steps to give some of the public space that cars have taken away from our kids back to them, even if only for one night (as a start). Every residential street should be closed to through traffic on Halloween. Normalize the Trick or Streets movement (https://lnkd.in/ghK7FUr8) and let's start taking some steps that show how our streets can do more than just move cars. #ChildFriendly #Transportation #VisionZero

New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC), Veteran Housing Corp would ask three questions about your housing projects: 1. How much funding, federal tax credits, or government benefits or incentives from all government sources did the projects receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants will not be displaced after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8

Thursday, September 28th is Good Neighbor Day and a fantastic opportunity to foster new relationships with your neighbors and build a sense of community. Here are some fun ideas on how to celebrate Good Neighbor Day: Introduce Yourself: Take this opportunity to introduce yourself to neighbors you haven’t met yet. Exchange contact information and learn a bit about each other. Create a Neighborhood Watch: A great way to encourage neighbors to look out for each other. Exchange Services: Offer your skills or services to your neighbors. In return, your neighbors may offer their expertise or services in their field. Random Acts of Kindness: On Good Neighbor Day, surprise your neighbors with small acts of kindness. It could be leaving a note of appreciation, baking cookies, or helping with a chore. Support Local Businesses: Encourage your neighbors to support local businesses together. Organize a "Shop Local" day where everyone shops at nearby stores and restaurants. Share Information: Share important information, such as emergency contact numbers, local services, and resources, to ensure everyone stays well informed. Remember that the key to celebrating Good Neighbor Day is building positive relationships, fostering a sense of unity, and being a good neighbor year-round. Small acts of kindness and neighborly gestures can go a long way in creating a harmonious and supportive community.
