👋 Say hello to Karen, one of our dedicated care assistants working in Wigan Borough. Karen entered the care sector 20 years ago and has never looked back. 💬 “As a Carer my role consists of helping people live as independently as they can,” she said. “From helping them to wash, dress and take medication to making meals and just having a good old chat.” Karen says she gets job satisfaction from knowing she is “making a difference”. Want to discover how you can make a difference? We offer flexible opportunities at the council and with our trusted care partners. No matter your background, bring your compassion and we'll provide the training you need. Visit 👉 wigan.gov.uk/caretojoin #CareToJoinUs #SnapshotIntoCare #MakingADifference

Wigan Council reposted this
Taking the road to Wigan Pier today, as Andy Burnham and I (ok and a few others) had a fantastic 'hard hat tour' of the Cotton Works. Great to speak to John Heaton about this development and Wigan Council chief executive Alison McKenzie-Folan OBE about her vision for Wigan. More news to follow and feature coverage in the next issue of Insider. Off to see Aidan Thatcher now.

Earlier today we marked #HolocaustMemorialDay with events at Wigan and Leigh Town Halls. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we remembered the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions more murdered through the Nazi persecution of other groups and in other more recent genocides around the world. 🕯️ The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘For a Better Future’, and as a community we reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten in the present and the future. The Mayor of Wigan Borough joined others across the UK in reading the ‘statement of commitment’, which pledges: 🟣 We recognise that the Holocaust shook the foundations of modern civilisation. Its unprecedented character and horror will always hold universal meaning. ⚪ We believe the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s and community’s collective memory. We honour the survivors still with us, and reaffirm our shared goals of mutual understanding and justice. 🟣 We must make sure that future generations understand the causes of the Holocaust and reflect upon its consequences. We vow to remember the victims of Nazi persecution and of all genocides. ⚪ We value the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives to protect or rescue victims, as a touchstone of the human capacity for good in the face of evil. 🟣 We recognise that humanity is still scarred by the belief that race, religion, disability or sexuality make some people’s lives worth less than others’. Genocide, antisemitism, racism, xenophobia and discrimination still continue. We have a shared responsibility to fight these evils. ⚪ We pledge to strengthen our efforts to promote education and research about the Holocaust and other genocides. We will do our utmost to make sure that the lessons of such events are fully learnt. 🟣 We will continue to encourage Holocaust remembrance by holding an annual UK Holocaust Memorial Day. We condemn the evils of prejudice, discrimination and racism. We value a free, respectful, and democratic society. #HMD2025
