Starting with a master planning effort, this transformation enhances student engagement by creating new spaces for dining, study, and socializing, while reimagining existing buildings for entirely new functions. Key upgrades include the renovation of Buildings 19 and 19A, which now feature modern dining venues, a cafe/juice bar, student lounges, and a flexible event space. It’s World Architecture Day, and we’re celebrating a few of our past projects around the world that provide inspiring spaces that foster learning and innovation. The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre in Canada is a transformative expansion and renovation of the University of British Columbia’s historic main library. Mount Royal University’s Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, also in Canada, is a world-class facility, featuring the 800-seat Bella Concert Hall. We designed the Library at the New American University, in Cairo, Egypt, which blends contemporary and traditional Islamic architecture and houses one of the largest English-language collections in the country. Last month, the Material Research Group from our office toured the facilities of Shaw and Sons Constructions, a company specializing in structural and architectural concrete. The team explored the facility, reviewed the showroom and mock-ups, and learned about their diverse concrete solutions. The tour concluded with a hands-on activity where they selected aggregate and created concrete pavers. Arts and Culture Practice Leader Bill Murray and our design team were in Denver last week to share design updates for the Loretto Heights Theatre Project with our clients. Ideas were exchanged among our team, the clients, and the operational crews as we discussed our visions for the next step of the project. The team also had the pleasure of revisiting our legacy project, Boettcher Concert Hall, designed by Norman Pfeiffer, one of the founding Principals of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates (HHPA), Pfeiffer’s legacy firm. The United States’ first concert hall in the round and a demonstration of HHPA’s innovative design approach, Boettcher hall has retained its impact over the years. July 1st was Canada day, and in honour of our neighbouring country we are looking back at one of our projects in Canada, the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts at Mount Royal University. Completed in 2013, the multi-floor facility is designed to LEED Gold certification and includes a concert hall with variable acoustics, ensemble and teaching studios, a recording studio, practice rooms, a multilevel lobby, and a roof terrace providing dramatic views of the campus as well as the surrounding region. The design of the Centre is based on a contemporary interpretation of the rural barn on Alberta’s vast prairies, set against a backdrop of the rugged Canadian Rockies. #perkinseastman #pfeiffer #mountroyaluniversity #performingarts #pac #respectcanadaday
