What does the USDA Forest Service's recent publication of the Draft Record of Decision mean for the Stibnite Gold Project? It means we can counteract China’s restrictions on antimony exports and help secure American antimony production for the U.S. at a critical time: https://lnkd.in/gV5aq7cW

Topic Highlight: The Russia-Ukraine War 💡 Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shocked global agricultural markets and threatened food security for millions who relied on the Black Sea for their imports. As global markets and supply chains continue adjusting to the conflict, the future of Ukraine’s agriculture sector as an integral global food supplier remains in jeopardy. The CSIS Global Food and Water Security Program continues to release original analysis on the implications of Russia’s invasion for global food and nutrition security, and the needs of Ukraine’s agriculture sector to both withstand and recover from the ongoing war. Check out our recent report on two crucial yet underreported aspects of Ukraine’s agricultural recovery: demining farmland and improving farmers’ access to fertilizers. Read “From the Ground Up: Demining Farmland and Improving Access to Fertilizer to Restore Ukraine’s Agricultural Production” in the attached PDF or on CSIS’s website: https://cs.is/3GFuF0m #GFWSP #foodsecurity #ukraine

The threat of overfishing to fish stocks worldwide is “alarming”, with estimates that at least 34 per cent of global stocks are overfished compared with 10 per cent in 1974, according to the Geneva-based body. This means they are being exploited so quickly that the fish population cannot replenish itself. https://lnkd.in/gweVGcQj

🌾 Setting the Record Straight: Ukraine’s Grain Exports 🚜📊 Despite recent successes, Ukraine’s agriculture sector is far from fully recovered. High-level claims that grain exports are meeting pre-war levels are misleading. Farmers have done an incredible job under immense pressure, yet the challenges they face are enormous. System-wide damages from the ongoing conflict mean that significant investment is needed to restore Ukraine’s agricultural production and export capabilities. We must recognize the resilience shown by Ukraine while also being realistic about the hurdles they face. Only through global support can Ukraine return to its role as a key player in global food security. #ukraineagriculture #grainexports #supplychain #foodsecurity #blackseacorridor #resilience Full read here: https://lnkd.in/dgT3ZAQX

Great post. Particularly relevant are the regulatory/permitting burdens regarding water use/discharge and the lack of investment at scale. I would also add push back by some local constituencies. Also clear, concise yet comprehensive educational information on some nuanced topics is needed to address some common misperceptions on the benefits for the consumer and regarding sustainability of flash frozen vs fresh and farm raised vs wild caught fish, as well as farm type, i.e. ocean net pens vs land-based bio-secure RAS systems. Our U.S. based company Living Seas has evaluated several land-based sites for marine aquaculture in the U.S. that all presented challenges, but we remain interested in finding viable sites stateside. To date we have only found large viable sites abroad that combine good infrastructure with welcoming regulatory environments. All are currently under development. On a very positive note, last month @Catherine Purcell at @NOAA held a bi-annual workshop for a global audience to advance the development of Seriola (aka Yellowtail Kingfish) aquaculture. As always, the workshop was very informative and Catherine and NOAA are certainly doing their part to support aquaculture development of this premium species.
Thank you to the USDA for the 100th Annual Ag Outlook Forum where we have engaged in discussions on the trends and forecasts for US agriculture. The US is the largest importing country for seafood in the world. Sure, America is big and tends to be the biggest {fill in the blank} in the world. But in agricultural commodities we tend to be net exporters - *not* importers. In 2022 our seafood trade deficit was $24 BILLION DOLLARS. That’s just shy of our corn and wheat net exports combined. We have been talking about the opportunity for increasing aquaculture production in the US for two decades. In that time the US annual growth has been 1% yoy while the global growth in aquaculture has been 8%. So why haven’t we done it? 1- Regulatory and permitting burdens 2- Lack of land/water use clarity 3- Lack of public/private partnerships 4- Investment at scale 5- Consumer perception What else? USDA is putting out public comment for National Aquaculture Development Plan. Please weigh in if you think you have a role in a growing US aqua-sector. www.ars.usda.gov/SCA #CenturyOfInsights #USDA #AgOutlookForum #CultivatingTheFuture Victoria Gutierrez Isaac Yun Caird Rexroad NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration David O'Brien

The Union government is making strides in international relations by allowing an extra 99,150 tonnes of white onions to be exported to six countries. This comes right after they permitted 2,000 tonnes, demonstrating their dedication to meeting diplomatic needs despite last year's export ban. #InternationalRelations #GovernmentPolicy #agriculture #farming #foodtrade #importexport #farmersmarket #sustainablefarming #localproduce #globaltrade #onions #freshproduce #organicproduce
