Hey, Little Rock! Let’s Talk About ATT&CK (And Then Attack Some Brats at Fassler Hall) Alright, listen up, cyber warriors and security samurai of the Little Rock area. Are you ready for a night that’s part tactical pow-wow and part social shenanigans? Strap in, because we’re about to MITRE ATT&CK this thing like it owes us money. First up: alignment. You know it. Your vendors know it. They’re more aligned than a chiropractor’s best patient. Seriously, these vendors are so aligned they’re practically Olympic synchronized swimmers. And mapped? Oh, they’re mapped. Heat maps, mind maps, maps that make cartographers weak in the knees. These guys are dropping heat in ways that would make a meteorologist blush. So come for the security chatter. Stay for the networking (and maybe a few bratwursts). We’re talking an hour of high-octane career content followed by a very serious social hour at Fassler Hall. Who knows? Hello Everyone In the heart of the digital world, a unique collaboration was taking place. Lenovo, a tech giant, had joined forces with Cloud Range, a leader in cyber defense. Their mission? To simulate a cyber-attack known as APT 27. A team of skilled cyber warriors, including myself, were chosen for this mission. Our task was not just to defend, but to hunt. We were the hunters in the vast wilderness of the intranet, tracking an invisible predator. The simulation began. The attacker, a phantom in the wires, started its onslaught. It was like a storm, chaotic and relentless. But we were prepared. We had trained for this. We began our hunt. Through the labyrinth of codes and firewalls, we traced the attacker’s path. Each step was a battle, each victory a triumph. The attacker was cunning, leaving behind a trail of malicious files like breadcrumbs in a forest. But we were relentless. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we cornered the attacker. It was a moment of triumph. We had tracked down the hunter, identified the malicious files, and secured our systems. As I look back on this journey, I realize that it was more than just a simulation. It was a testament to our resilience, our skill, and our determination. How do you survive “Blue Screen of Death Day brought to you by Crowdstrike” if you were part of the team? To paraphrase AEW wrestler Toni Storm: “Chin up. Chest out, And watch for the shoe.” 1) Chin up: Everyone in tech makes mistakes but most of them are in private. This one is very public. Don’t worry. You’ll make more as will everyone else and someone else will make a bigger one. However, being in cybersecurity, those mistakes are more public facing. 2). Chest out: There is a lot of armchair quarterbacking out there right now (I have my own predictions but I’ll keep those to myself). You’ll be in the news cycle for today but you do something every day that 99.9999% of the global population can barely understand let alone do. Good on you. 3). Watch for the shoe: Stuff always comes out of no way. There will be some stuff that happens behind closed doors that might catch you off guard and could disrupt things. Firings happen. Take this as an opportunity to learn about the situation and what went wrong so you can improve it for next time. My entire career, I’ve worked to make government cybersecurity more transparent and accessible. I’ve continued this work at Rhode Island College by promoting consistent collaboration between the private and public sectors.   Microsoft’s Windows Endpoint Security Ecosystem Summit, happening today, is a critical moment for the broader cyber ecosystem. I’m glad to see that Microsoft will convene this meeting to discuss pressing security issues facing individuals, small businesses, large companies, and government agencies.   However, Microsoft will hold this summit behind closed doors, without input from the public or media access. While the summit is an important conversation to hold, Microsoft should consider holding an open forum to discuss emerging cyber issues and recent incidents, including last summer’s China hack and the recent global outage. Our collective national security depends on Microsoft’s ability to build secure systems and take accountability when something does go wrong.

The fact that we live in a world where we just throw all our eggs in one basket - The Technology Basket - is daunting. 😥 A few days ago, I was having a conversation with an acquaintance and I explained to her that unfortunately we have placed all our eggs in the Technology-AI basket and in case of a failure in any given system, the world would come to a stall. 😰 Yes. Confirmed! Even though this is considered one of the largest IT failures in history, brace for impact - more are coming. 🤷🏾♀️ "CrowdStrike is an American cybersecurity firm founded in 2011 and based in Austin, Texas. I mean, I wouldn't say anything to diminish CrowdStrike, and to be honest, they have done many good deeds for the cybersecurity industry as a whole. However, I believe that we have placed our trust too entirely on technology with little to no backup plans. 🤔 Every single thing that happens in life is a great lesson, but I worry that CrowdStrike might not recover from this one. Open-Source Security: Use with Caution A decade ago dozens of startups launched with Intel-as-a-Service. These organizations did the industry a solid and the ones that survived continue to do a great job of overcoming lack of expertise and process at global organizations to analyze, curate, catalog, enrich, and age out intel. As #infosec budgets tighten, organizations are quick to remove things they think they can live without from their operating plans and opt for free options. Carefully evaluate and manage risks associated with using open-source intel or broader software in your environment. For many, it means more risk, lack of timely support, or more noise and op-ex rather than targeted resources to protect critical assets. #InformationSecurity #SecOps #OpenSource
