Foreign policy expert: Black Sea security | Ukraine | Türkiye | Professor of National Security Studies, George C. Marshall Center Non-resident Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council [Views are my own]
Two years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the battle for the Black Sea - once an “invisible front” of the Russian war - has come into the spotlight. With multiple global repercussions of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, it has become clear that what happens in the Black Sea does not stay in the Black Sea. Invading sovereign states, undermining the freedom of navigation and security of supply chains, violating international maritime law, using electronic warfare and spoofing, threatening the safety of critical infrastructure - all of these Russian malign activities in the Black Sea create dangerous precedents for the future warfare far beyond the Black Sea coasts. It is a high time to develop a bold and comprehensive strategy to deter Russia, bolster defense capabilities of regional allies, and demonstrate a firm resolve to defend rules-based order to Iran and China. I had a privilege to lead the George C. Marshall Center effort to organize a conference, in cooperation with the Romanian National Defense University, to explore ways to strengthen NATO’s defense and deterrence in the region, ramp up cooperation among the regional states, and discuss the US Black Sea strategy. My heartfelt thanks to the GCMC team for a terrific support on all stages of preparation, to our partners, and, of course, to all our participants and speakers. MSc Maritime Affairs (WMU) / Marine Environmental Protection, Pollution Response, and Climate Change/ Co-founder of WMU Latin American Alumni Association LATAMA
Building partnerships Chile- Eastern Africa Last week was a historical one as our organization received the visit of representatives from IGAD at our DIRECTEMAR, ARMADA DE CHILE headquarters for the first time. Therefore, I had the opportunity to deliver two presentations: the first on #MarineEnvironmentalProtection, #PollutionResponse, and #ClimateChange, and later on how we tackle the challenge of #IUUFishing in our jurisdiction. This event was the first professional-technical approach between our #maritimeadministration and #Africa, aiming for #capacitydevelopment in common global challenges for both regions. #capacitybuilding #capacitydevelopment #patnershipsforthegoals

Caribbean Civil Society seeks a stronger voice in defining sustainable development priorities in small island states, and a recognition of the vital the role they can play. "The Caribbean We Want" is a document developed by Caribbean Civil Society outlining priorities to feed into the SIDS4 conference in May 2027. We are asking governments and business to recognise 1) the role of civil society in transition 2) that economic development is a lot about small and micro enterprises, not just big business 3) that justice is critical, and needs to be integrated into development plans and governance We need a shift in mindset so that government work with civil society. https://lnkd.in/e8rcu9me Go check out the SIDS4 site (https://lnkd.in/eqwj4dg6), and of course the CANARI website (www.canari.org) or write to Canari at sids4@canari.org

It takes the wisdom of the elders, (and young people's energy to win). As a partner for Campus collaborations for the Generation Now project of EMY Africa, we happened to not only witness but also contribute to a one-of-a-kind three (3) day expo ¬ EMY Africa Expo 2024. One of the major highlights for us was the Inspiring Greatness Forum. This is just a glimpse of the brands and personalities that graced the event. Alex Dadey, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, Jesse Agyepong, Elsie Effah Kaufmann, PhD, Charles Abani, Dr. Ellen Hagan, Kojo Soboh, Ibrahim Mahama, Elliot Dadey (KGL FOUNDATION), Frances Quarcoopome, Kafui Dey, Adjetey Anang, Albert Chris Soboh, Frank Tsikata and Yvonne Osei Adobea. P.S. Which of the personalities is your role model? Please check the comment section for the full brochure.

Over the past four years of IPSS events, it has been a tradition to have an artist from Drawing Change visually represent key takeaways from the panels at our conferences. This particular graphic highlights the key takeaways from the panel Redefining Collaborative Development in Treaty 8 Territory, sponsored by Ovintiv. Here’s what we took away from the discussion: 1️⃣ The health of the land is intricately linked to the health of the people of the land. 2️⃣ There is great value in creating opportunities in local communities. 3️⃣ Indigenous people are proud of their land and want to be involved in everything that affects it. 4️⃣ Reinforcing the importance of open communication, it’s clear that transparency, trust, and honesty are foundational in building long-term relationships. 5️⃣ And, remember, as a friendly piece of advice - never show up without lunch! #economicreconciliation #undrip #IndigenousCanada
