Discover provocative, but peer-reviewed, perspectives in the latest edition of the Journal of Controversial Ideas, featuring seven articles that challenge conventional wisdom. Topics range from the efficacy of affirmative action in medical education to the ethics of procreation. Authors discuss issues like gender identity, the roots of Islamist extremism, and perceptions of discrimination in healthcare. Each piece invites readers to rethink important questions, and lead to a deeper engagement with these critical issues than we find in most current discussions. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gjApSTm9

NEW BOOK SERIES: Gender and Crime in a Globalised World - Call for Proposals This series showcases innovative research and debates centred around the increasingly globalised intersections of gender and crime. The topical contributions focus on a range of issues affecting victims, offenders, and practitioners including crime, criminalisation, victimisation, access to justice, and statutory sector experiences. Intersections of identity are also reflected through the employment of feminist, queer, postcolonial, and masculinities theorising. We are interested in publishing innovative work from both established and early career researchers. We welcome proposals that offer critical insights into the nature, status and future of gendered crime, harm, incarceration, culture, and victimisation. We are particularly keen to promote global scholarship, views, and debates on these themes. Contact regarding proposals If you would like to submit a proposal, or to discuss ideas, then please contact one of the Series Editors: Marian Duggan, m.c.duggan@kent.ac.uk; Silvana Tapia Tapia, s.tapiatapia@bham.ac.uk; Leah Cleghorn, leah.cleghorn@ntu.ac.uk; Sarah Agnela, sarahagnelapublications@gmail.com For more information: https://lnkd.in/es96VBYJ

💡We are happy to invite you to collaborate in a new, experimental volume to be published in the book series Gender Perspectives in Law, Springer, under the title: Gender, Law, and Power: The South-North Engagement and Action. ➡️ This volume, Gender, Law, and Power: The South-North Engagement and Action would complement and extend the perspectives and understandings provided by books published in the series by opening a new space for dialogue—between the Global South and the Global North. ➡️ Instead of taking the South and the North as self-evident and coherent discursive and political concept-entities, the volume will attempt to bring legal, gender and feminist studies scholars and activists, anthropologists, historians, and social scientists concerned with injustice, oppression and discrimination along the intersecting axes of gender, sex-orientation, race, class (and caste) from across the globe in conversation with each other. ➡️ For further information and deadlines for submissions, please check the document bellow We are looking forward to receiving your papers!

🌏 Today is #international #day against #racial #discrimination. Questions: ❎ Should #journalists mention ethnic or racial identification in their stories ❓ ✳ When is #race or #ethnicity relevant in #media production ❓ ❇ Who decides whether there is a racial or #ethnic angle ❓ 2002 MDI’s Reporting Diversity Manual already addressed this issue : "Generally, race or ethnicity are not relevant in a story unless ethnicity is the factor that is at the core of the story. In stories involving politics, social action or social conditions, ethnicity is not automatically relevant. Writers should be careful not to let their word choices let the reader infer that ethnicity is an issue." ❌ Have things changed since then? Not really. ⭕ If we were to do an updated version of this Manual we would probably keep most of the content from this 2002 edition. I am a senior practice development lawyer in the employment team at Irwin Mitchell and help our clients and team keep up to date.
My lovely colleague Rebecca Denvers has written a thoughtful blog on the lessons other employers can learn from the recent decision in Miller v University of Bristol. It's a case about belief discrimination - in this case, Mr Miller's opposition to anti-Zionism which was protected because his views didn't support violence as a means of opposing Zionism or oppose the idea of Jewish self-determination or the existence of a Jewish state. The facts of this case arose before the current Israel/Palestinian conflict in Gaza. Emotions are running high and we’re seeing disagreements about the war being debated on social media and spilling out into the workplace. Rebecca sets out some useful tips to help employers navigate conflicts between staff about this and other conflict of belief issues. #hr #employmentlaw #legalupdate #discrimination #protectedbeliefs #antizionism Irwin Mitchell
