* Striving for Success on the Greens My Journey through Golf Professional Qualifying School. Hey everyone, Just wanted to share a little update on my recent experience at the golf professional qualifying school. It didn't go as well as I had hoped, but that's the nature of the game, right? Golf teaches us resilience, and I'm ready to bounce back stronger. The qualifying school was a tough challenge, and I faced some formidable competition. Despite not achieving the results I aimed for, I see it as a learning opportunity. Every swing, every putt – they all contribute to the bigger picture of improvement. Now, I'm channeling my disappointment into motivation. I've identified areas of my game that need refinement, and I'm committed to putting in the work. The journey doesn't end here; it's just a stepping stone toward future tournaments where I'll have the chance to showcase my progress. Success in golf, much like in life, is a journey filled with highs and lows. I appreciate the support I've received from friends, family, and fellow golf enthusiasts. Your encouragement fuels my determination to give my best in the upcoming tournaments. So here's to the grind, the early mornings on the course, and the countless hours of practice. I'm embracing the process, staying focused, and looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. The next swing might just be the one that turns it all around. Teaching Elite Players vs Amateurs - What's the Difference? No matter the student, the role of the instructor has never changed in it's purest sense: To Improve the Clients Condition.... I consider myself very lucky because whether I'm teaching a Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose or Paul McGinley or one of my members at Knickerbocker Country Club in NJ, I've always recognized 'that' one common denominator; to improve the clients condition. Curiously, I've always viewed it like a surgeon in so much as it matters not who is on the table, because at that point they are all the same, all that matters is they exit, on their terms, with the prospect of getting better. As instructors, we have a job to do: 1. Discover what the student needs help with (be specific) 2. Watch, learn and diagnose. 3. Clearly explain the new technical direction. 4. Teach. So here's the trick, who ever that student may be: find out what success would look like to them - this can be discovered by one of the following questions: 1. 'After the session today, what would you like to achieve?' 2. 'What would you like to see the ball do differently?' 3. 'How will you know that things are changing for you?' This is what I call the discovery period and the more your discover pre lesson the more informed you are of the important deliverables. To end, I consider myself lucky, students are students to me with challenges they need to overcome and it really doesn't matter if they have 6 Majors, a handicap of 6 or have been playing for 6 weeks...the end point is simple: Improve them allied to their desires.... 2024 signals my 20th year as a member of the PGA of Australia. Although my career has taken me away from the industry, I am still very proud member and I hope I will be back there in some capacity one day. Reflecting on the past two decades, I recognise the influence golf has had on my journey. Here are three lessons that have resonated with me: 1. Everyone puts their pants on the same way. My experiences with tournaments and corporate golf events taught me that on the golf course, everyone starts equally. I saw very senior executives struggle with golf and perhaps not show the same calmness (or language) that they show in the boardroom. Remember it doesn’t matter who someone is, their status or title they are no different to you…. you are in the room for a reason. 2. Lifelong learning. I started playing golf at 19 and decided I wanted to be a professional golfer. Because many of my peers had been playing for years I had to play catchup. The secret to bridging that gap was not solely hard work but also curiosity and a drive to seek out knowledge, this helped me accelerate my improvement. There are so many different ways to get to where you want to be (swing a club)— identify what's essential, gain the knowledge, and adopt the pieces that work for you. 3. Find a Coach I found there were two types of golf professionals those who have no idea how they do what they do and those who are invested in understanding the intricacies of the golf swing. Whichever one they were, one thing they all had in common was a coach. In my career I haven’t had one coach I have had many and each has taught me different skills. Find one or multiple coaches to help you get better at what you do. What else has golf taught you?

This picture was taken about 2-weeks ago when I took my family rafting in Glacier National Park. (Side note: Add a visit to Glacier to your "To-Do List.) What do you see when you look at this picture? I see BIG smiles. How is that, though? These people are all in rough waters. Here's how: - They are in it together. Rowing in the same direction. - They have the right gear to survive whatever the river throws their way. - They have a Captain navigating the ship & leading the team. - They know (and trust) that there are calmer waters ahead. - They celebrate the fact that they are willing to do what others fear. Now ask yourself this: - Is your boat filled with likeminded professionals rowing together? - Do you have & are you using all of your tools? - Who's your Captain? - Are you trusting the process? - Have you allowed yourself to celebrate for making it this far?

This week's Leading with Character blog is, "Consistency is Key to Success," and we'll learn a little bit about what it takes to succeed from a US Coast Guard Academy cadet, junior Nic Reeser. Last fall, Cadet Reeser won the 2023 Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Singlehanded National Championship. He didn’t just win – he killed it by coming in 11 points ahead of the next closest competitor. Unlike the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), there is no Division I, II, or III in intercollegiate sailing, governed by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). Every college and university that supports a sailing team competes in the same category. That means the smallest school—the 1,000-person Coast Guard Academy—must go up against all the big schools like Yale, Georgetown, Brown, Tulane, Stanford, Dartmouth, and many more.  Attributes of a Winner  So, what does it take to win at that level? Asked what matters most in a regatta, many sailors might justifiably point to tactical skills. Surely those are critically important. But it’s often not the most talented athlete who wins the competition, or the smartest student who achieves the greatest career success—especially when measured over a lifetime. What, then, is the key to success—on the racecourse and, by extrapolation, in the workplace? To find out, let’s turn to an interview in the February/March issue of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association’s publication, The Bulletin. The Power of Consistency  According to Cadet Reeser, speaking about competing for the Singlehanded National Championship, “Winning in this fleet is all about consistency. I didn’t win a single race at the Nationals qualifiers this year. I was aiming to be sixth or seventh at every weather mark…I had to make sure there was no big risk-taking or critical failures.” For context, intercollegiate sailing regattas consist of many races over the course of a day or more—up to 14 in the case of the singlehanded championships.  Unlike most other sports, sailing is intensely subject to the forces of nature. Every racecourse and every race is different. Wind, currents, sea state, the waterway, the shape of the racecourse – all those factors and more can be ever-changing. That’s part of what makes it important for the competitors to be consistent. It’s a lot like life, isn’t it? Life’s not just a 100-yard dash that you win or lose. Rather, life is more like sailing with a series of races that are averaged at the conclusion of the regatta. Being consistent can lead to greater success at work and in life over the longer term.
