Great to be at NHS Confederation’s Primary Care conference yesterday, which was buzzing and definitely the place to be 😉 Some definite themes from the various sessions: - Funding (more ideally!) and greater certainty of funding enabling longer term planning - Continuing to grow the workforce and retaining experienced staff - the success of ARRS roles and integrated neighbourhood working - importance of co-locating teams - Investing in new estates - and the creative solutions colleagues have found to expand/ repurpose existing space - Focussing on capacity rather than access - moving on from the binary debate about access vs continuity - patients value both - Aligning operating models within Primary Care - between Primary Care and Secondary Care - to drive out inefficiencies and identify opportunities to collaborate - ICB’s role in creating the right conditions for change - empowering leaders to innovate and giving them the resources to make change happen - Supporting Primary Care leaders to build consensus - enabling Primary Care to have impact and influence Brilliant to reconnect with some inspiring Primary Care leaders, former colleagues and friends Pramit Patel Neil Modha DL Nikki Mallinder Charlotte Sydney Wilson and Ruth Rankine to name a few!

Evidence demonstrates that quality and safety of care are closely linked to the well-being of staff [1] and that quality and safety improve if we can improve joy at work for staff. [2] It is the things that are human and built around relationships that make the biggest impact, and yet they are often activities and ways of working that our health and care systems appear to value the least.[3] We need more compassionate leaders that demonstrate higher levels of kindness and start by asking what matters to their staff. Compassionate leaders do not have all the answers or simply tell people what to do; instead, they engage with the people they work with to find shared solutions to problems. Compassionate leadership is inclusive and collective. Compassionate leadership also enables teams to flourish, by engaging and supporting all team members, and creating an inclusive, psychologically safe environment in which diversity in all forms is valued and team members contribute creatively and enthusiastically to team performance. Having a positive culture that fosters openness and learning rather than fear of blame is critical in health and social care. But the public also need to have confidence that serious failures are dealt with. How can regulation protect the public without undermining efforts to address toxic cultures? We explored this tension in our 2022 report, Safer Care for All: https://lnkd.in/gcZWxWcB In this video, our Chief Executive Alan Clamp discusses the challenges of speaking up with Patient Safety Commissioner Dr Henrietta Hughes. For speaking up to be effective, fair and supportive organisational cultures need to be fostered by senior leaders at the very top. “This will trickle all the way down the system to those interactions that patients have with healthcare professionals,” the PSC says, which will drive improvement and lead to better outcomes for patients and staff.
