11 years ago…… 👇 I was in college and I remember my chemistry teacher telling us all how a friend of mine was able to get AAAA in his AS levels. (He had a conversation with him beforehand as he was in a different class) The secret was: Every night before bed, he would read one page from each textbook 📚 That was it. He’d read and think to himself, what’s the key message or component being taught here? He wasn’t just memorising. He’d read to himself, question it, try to think of a real life example where it would apply - all the ingredients needed to really understand a topic. Going further back, when I was in year 8, I remember the teacher writing the definition of diffusion on the whiteboard. “Diffusion is the movement of molecules or particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.” Didn’t make much sense to me…. Until she asked one of us if we had deodorant. She took the can of Lynx and asked us all to stand on the opposite side of the classroom and started spraying it. Within seconds, we could finally smell the fragrance. It made sense. The particles moved from the can and spread out through the air, moving from a high concentration to a low concentration. The point is - as a trainee pharmacist, make this year all about how and why? Question everything, try to learn as much as you can and you’ll have yourself to thank by the end of it. #Pharmacy #Trainee #Tips

OCCA Career Event As a third year pharmaceutical science student at the Univertsy of Salford I was able to have the opportunity to attend a talk hosted by OCCA which had various panelist’s from whom shed light on the career paths of their team members, from their early beginnings to their current positions. During the talk each individual would describe how their career transformation took off and the early days of exploration to their current positions which showed that in the science industry in particular the chemical industry was very adaptable in regards to career progression. The industry professionals each shared their unique career projection, from the early days of exploration to their current positions thus showing the adaptability in the science industry. For instance Suraj, an account manager at BASF reiterated the points about the importance of customer relationships and sustainability initiatives and how his role plays a crucial role in the sustainability in developing global commerce. Furthermore there were speakers like Isla who studied biochemistry at the university of Salford and can relate to the students on the course and she discussed how she would oversee paint products and is current research and development colour technologist. Once the presentations had taken place then individually each of the industry professionals from OCCA would sit down and engage with our groups and began discussions thus allowing myself the opportunity to ask questions about a potential future in the chemical industry. In conclusion this inspired and further encouraged myself to explore various diverse career paths and to embrace opportunities for personal and professional development. I look forward to contributing positively to the pharmaceutical industry through discovery and potential growth.

Appreciation post part 1 Having wrapped up the organisation and delivery of the "Careers & Employability" conference once again at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Sheffield , I can't feel anything else other than appreciation for a) the breadth and depth of career options in #chemicalengineering and b) our invited alumni and companies who demonstrated point "a" to our students. It was great to meet new people, strengthen existing relationships, broaden my horizons, and of course hear about the journeys of chemeng graduates in various industrial sectors and also in more unconventional roles, all accompanied by countless experience-based tips on #careers and #employability. Navigating Career Success Beyond Degrees On Thursday 25th January, I attended an enlightening talk at The University of Salford where inspirational pundits from OIL & COLOUR CHEMISTS' ASSOCIATION, BASF, HMG Paints Ltd, and Sherwin-Williams gave insightful presentation about their diverse backgrounds and experiences that led them to their current professional roles.   As a pharmaceutical science student with modules heavily based in life sciences, I initially questioned the relevance of a talk focused on careers in coating and painting. However, this insightful and engaging talk really changed my perspective.   The professional journey of Tia Barrow, one of the speakers who took advantage of a placement opportunity in the painting and coatings industry and later landed in a role in the same industry; Paul Sheppard, who started from the lab and transitioned the commercial field; as well as the profound impact of strategic job-hopping on Tony Heslop career progression left a lasting impression on me; I am motivated to seize opportunities.   What impressed me the most were the academic and professional journeys by Ann-Marie Etherington, Will Johnson, and Suraj Denani. They successfully navigated through the world of chemistry despite lacking backgrounds in STEM. Isla Taylor, whose academic background is based on life sciences was also one of my favourite speakers as we had similar backgrounds. Their stories challenged the idea of strictly aligning academic degrees with professional paths.   As a result of this transformative talk, my perspective has changed, and I have been motivated to prioritise continuous career progression and development. This talk emphasised on the significance of exploring career opportunities and not narrowing our career paths based on just academic qualifications. Yours truly circa 1995 studying Analytical Chemistry at Atlantic Technological University Letterkenny, Ireland (previously Letterkenny RTC). Even back then I loved a GREAT EXPERIMENT 😉 Unfortunately my career in Science / Healthcare/ Pharma was cut short 4 years after graduating. I had just moved to Australia, after leaving a great job with Scheering Plough (now Merck) in Cork, Ireland. My new role for a petrochemical company in Botany was short lived as my body had severe reactions to the lab chemicals I was using on a daily basis. So here I was, fresh off the plane, earning a fraction of what I was being paid in Ireland, with much higher rental outgoings and physically unable to work. I tried to find a new Laboratory job with no luck whatsoever, finding that Australian companies at that time preferred male candidates for lab work (you can read between the lines!) I was college educated, 4 years experience with a number of top tier American multi-national organisations under my belt, chronically I'll with bills to pay and no prospect of a new job on the horizon. 💥 There was no way I could go back to college for another 3 / 4 / 5 years! 💥 There was no way I was getting back on the plane to go back home to Ireland...I'd only just landed! So I had to get creative.... The IT industry was starting to boom AND the best thing was you could get a foot in the door without a college education 🙌🏻 I started studying, gaining certifications in Microsoft then Cisco & Checkpoint to become an IT Network Security Engineer then Security Architect....very unusual entry roles into the IT industry! This is just one of many career course-corrections on my meandering career path. Some changes were forced upon me others I initiated myself.
