In 2024, Ronald Jean Louis was hired by AFRICAN FAMILY HEALTH ORGANIZATION AFAHO as their new Male Cultural Health Navigator. He provides peer support and case management services. The Cultural Health Navigator's role is critical to helping African and Caribbean men address social and economic drivers of health and connect with care. "Since joining AFAHO, men (young and old) have sought my support with so many health concerns (including some sensitive, male-specific concerns). In a short time, I’ve quickly understood the responsibility I’ve inherited as men are more comfortable sharing health issues and seeking support from another man. I have found my place here at AFAHO and it has redoubled my motivation to serve the community." - Ronald Jean Louis, AFAHO Male Cultural Health Navigator Visit www.afaho.org to learn more about the role of Cultural Health Navigator. #phillyhealth #healthequity #healthequitynow #phillynonprofit #nonprofitsupport #communityhealth #philadelphia

Valuable Perspectives that resonate with my own work and life experience! The solutions sit with those affected. If we want to help we need to enable, support, listen. Move #engagement to #meaningfulengagement and #experience to #livedexperience What does meaningful engagement look like to you?
👏Today, an active member of our network of people with lived experiences of #NCDs & #MentalHealth, Charity Muturi from Kenya, shared her insights and calls to action for world leaders at the first meeting of the WHO Symposium for Meaningful Engagement. ℹ️ As she shared her story & advocacy journey, she mentioned all the challenges people using public health services are facing in Kenya and worldwide. 📢According to her, in our journey of 'nothing FOR us WITHOUT us' we need to include 'nothing for the Poor, without the Poor'. 🗨️"Sometimes we assume to understand the priorities of the poor and copy-paste private solutions to public problems." We should change that. 📢Among other things, Charity reiterated the call for meaningful engagement of people with lived experience in policies and services from strategy creation to monitoring and evaluation. ℹ️ She mentioned several key advocacy opportunities for the NCD & mental health community, such as #UNGA, HLM on NCDs, World Health Summit and #WHA. She also referred to key helpful instruments for the advocacy efforts, such as the Global Charter for Meaningful Involvement, WHO Publication & Framework, and UN Compendium.

April is #NationalMinorityHealthMonth. This month forces us to recognize the deep health disparities in our city and country. Racial and ethnic minority populations face higher rates of poor health and disease than their white counterparts. What can an organization like BCS do to combat this issue? The first step is addressing the social determinants of health (SODH), like education, poverty, racism, housing, and other non-medical factors that affect community health. By identifying and working to improve issues like these, we are one step closer to a more equitable Brooklyn. In an unprecedented world, humanity has failed. We live at a time when everybody is for himself or herself, without any compassion for each other whatsoever. I have bumped into a documentary showcased by BBC Africa on cases of the elderly being tortured and mishandled. These are the people who made us; we came out of them. These people are the same who were at the frontlines to ensure we have a country we can call our own. The elderly and the vulnerable are the most highly affected people at such times when there is a lot of distress in the nation and globally. These groups of people are very sensitive to their surroundings, and if they are being rejected, Many of them die rejected; this is a sad state of affairs, especially in our nation, where there is a whole ministry to address such issues arising in our elderly and children's homes. The Social Protection Department under the ministry needs to relook at and review the policies that govern these homes. If a home doesn’t have a healthcare facility, it should not be licensed. Any home, whether for the elderly or children, needs to have a proper health care system; this will ensure that every person has a right to proper health. Seeing the video brought to my attention the need for the government to work with local communities, NGOs, stakeholders, and faith-based organizations and create a proper framework on how to take care of these people. It is not about the stipends they receive; actually, most of this money is laundered by their family members or even staff assigned to these homes. Can there be proper regulations and strict guidelines on the disbursement of these stipends? Can there be an institute that can enroll passionate personnel to be caregivers? We all deserve to be loved and given an enabling environment to thrive in. Let us be humans once again. Rebecca Mutitu Environmentalist. #humanlivesmatter #betterworldforall #love #sustainableliving

There is a discreet rigour in grassroots #perinatalmentalhealth services. It may sound like an odd term to use but it's intentional. When a vulnerable new or expectant parent engages with services like Smile Group Charity and its fellow VCSEs, they are designed to feel warm, welcoming and non-clinical. This is evident from our work at The Hearts & Minds Partnership within the growing community of grassroots PMH services across the country. Rooted in local communities, these third sector organisations are nurtured and grown often via lived experience. We want them to feel non-judgemental and friendly and to have a perceived simplicity to them. This massively helps to reduce (understandable) apprehension and anxiety about engaging with a support service. From behind the scenes it's a different perspective. There's a deliberate invisibility to the complex layers of safeguarding, processes and partnership liaison (we're embedded in the clinical network) that keeps parents (and the service itself) safe and protected. If a parent is experiencing suicidal ideation, we can promptly accelerate support via safeguarding pathways, while ensuring they are held with compassion. Just because there is tea and chat, doesn't mean there isn't sophistication to the model. This nuanced approach means the admin, data capture and careful consideration of risk is not overtly part of parents' experiences. While parents are aware of our joined-up working, they don't get bogged down in the bureaucracy. The discretion here is sometimes underplayed. Commissioners, stakeholders and even peers in the health system may not always fully appreciate the rigour and skill that goes into the delivery of a grassroots service. We want it to feel warm, 'real' and friendly at the point of access (that's why it works so well), but the scaffolding to protect it is not often recognised by those with an untrained eye. When a lovely beneficiary-turned-volunteer joined one of our strategy meetings at Smile, she later confessed she didn't realise quite how professional and in-depth the inner-workings were. Discreet rigour at play. #perinatalmentalhealth #growthegrassroots #vcse #community

R U OK? is a public health promotion charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. The subject of mental health is at the core of many government-funded grant programs. This week we look at an opportunity issued by the Department of Health Victoria in support of Women's health support groups. This grant is available to provide funding to assist non-government women’s health organisations to deliver women’s support groups that aim to improve women’s understanding of their healthcare journey, create a safe space for sharing women’s lived experience and minimise effects of any stigma women experience. Successful recipients will share $500,000 per year over a 4-year period between 2023-27. Julie Mikhail . . Unaccompanied child (UC) The age of these individuals, their separation from parents and relatives, and the hazardous journey they take make UC especially vulnerable to human trafficking, exploitation, and abuse. The majority of UC are cared for through a network of state licensed ORR-funded care providers, most of which are located close to areas where immigration officials apprehend large numbers of children. These provider facilities are state licensed and must meet ORR requirements to ensure a high level of quality of care. Care providers operate under cooperative agreements and contract. Services include: - Classroom education. - Health care - Socialization/recreation - Vocational training - Mental health services - Family reunification - Access to legal services; and - Case management. #familyreunification #URM #AtPromiseYouthSolutions #Houston #Texas #trailblazer #fostercare #fosteringsaveslives. #fosterparents #fostering #fosterlove #fosterfamily #fostercareawareness #fosteringsaveslives #nonprofit #fosterkids #fosterchildren #GregBoyle #lovewhatyoudo #WomeninBusiness #momtrepreneur #DreamBig #AtRiskYouth #entrepreneurlife #entrepreneurship #entrepreneur
