This week, PHP Program Director Lauren Blair Wechsler attended the 2024 Birth Equity Funders Summit in Chicago. The Summit was convened by Funders for Birth Justice & Equity whose mission is to end inequities in birth outcomes and improve experiences and outcomes for all birthing people by advancing respectful, physiologic care and equitable access to birth workers. It was inspiring to be surrounded by community leaders, government officials, and philanthropic colleagues who are committed to working together to advance healthy, safe, and joyful births and eliminate disparities. Thank you to the conference sponsors, organizers, and speakers who championed the importance of community-based solutions, cross-sector collaboration, and holistic, culturally responsive care throughout the perinatal period. Mothers deserve to raise a family and enjoy their careers. Mothers should be listened to by their medical professionals. Mothers should NOT be forced to go back to work weeks after giving birth, bleeding, swollen, and navigating the early stages of newborn life. These beliefs are just some reasons why I recently joined Chamber of Mothers as a co-facilitator for one of its local chapters of moms advocating for a better America: for ourselves, our families, and our children. My guess is, as a fellow mother, you’re passionate about maternal rights too. But it can feel overwhelming to be a problem solver when the issue is so big. And when frankly, being a parent in America is tiring AF. We're out to build a bold and protective space for action, where moms can come together to take small steps that will ladder up to transformative change for the next generation. Chamber of Mothers is a national, nonpartisan nonprofit that mobilizes Americans around public policy solutions for moms, bringing local-chapter advocacy to Capitol Hill. Our three pillar issues are 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡—all things we know are intricately tied to maternal, infant, human, economic, and global well-being. I can't wait to share more about the work Chamber of Mothers is doing locally and nationally. Stay tuned, or better yet, donate and join us!

Relentless Pragmatist, Risk Taker, Coach & Entrepreneurial Problem Solver Focused on Building Lasting Solutions for People and Communities
What are we doing?! This data follows years of data that indicates that our maternal well being is abysmal compared to similarly developed countries. And now this. How can we say we care about education, economic mobility, and more when we’re ignoring the inequities that exist from birth? Philanthropy has to do more — in the advocacy space, the direct giving space, and the system change space to address this. Otherwise we’re thwarting our resources trying to solve symptoms instead of root causes. #philanthropy #systemschange #maternalhealth #reproductivehealth

Health disparities remain an issue in the Hispanic community, especially related to maternal and infant health Driven predominantly by lack of access to high-quality care and preventive care, as well as language and cultural barriers. That’s why I love the impactful work of Accompany Doula Care! 🌎❤️ Accompany is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing health equity and improving maternal and infant health outcomes through Medicaid doula services. Co-founded by one of my dear friends, Alejandra Garcia, MPH, a fellow Venezuelan who not only inspires me but also embodies the spirit of giving back to our community in an incredible way. Their mission is clear: to focus on enhancing birth outcomes, especially in areas where disparities and inequities persist. They provide essential support to birthing individuals who may not have the means or support during this significant moment in their lives. What sets Accompany apart is their commitment to offering culturally and linguistically appropriate services that break down communication and cultural barriers. This approach is critical, as several sources report higher childbirth complication rates for Black and Hispanic women in the US, regardless of age. In fact, Black and Indigenous women are three to four times more likely to die from childbirth-related complications. Accompany Doula Care aims to drive positive change by: 🌱 Improving the health outcomes of their patient population. 🌱 Reducing the per capita cost of healthcare. 🌱 Enhancing the patient experience and satisfaction. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I invite you to learn more about Accompany Doula Care and explore ways to support their work. Partnering with them is an opportunity to contribute to the betterment of our community and help bridge the gap in healthcare disparities. For more information on how to partner with Accompany, please reach out to them at info@accompanydoulacare.com And for those wondering, a doula is a certified professional who provides non-medical physical, emotional, and educational support to birthing parents throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, helping them achieve the best possible birth experience. #HispanicHeritageMonth #SupportNonprofits #HealthEquity --- Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15 to October 15 we celebrate the rich cultural heritage, contributions, and achievements of Hispanic Americans to the history of the United States.

We need to look after newborn parents. Launching in recognition of the UN Global Day of Parents, Gidget Foundation Australia’s NEW brand awareness campaign, "Gidget is here for you", is now LIVE. This campaign strives to underscore the need for broader community support for newborn parents, who require as much care and attention as their babies during this sometimes-overwhelming transition. Every year in Australia, 100,000 new and expectant and new parents are impacted by perinatal depression and anxiety - that’s 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers. Tragically, maternal suicide is a leading cause of death among expectant and new mothers. Despite these confronting statistics, there's still a stigma attached to admitting one's struggles, as the early years of parenthood are often idealised as a period of pure joy. This campaign was previewed at our recent fundraising lunch and there was not a dry eye in the room of the over 700 attendees. Please share, and more importantly, take care of new parents. The Gidget Foundations services can be accessed here https://lnkd.in/g8UYhTbb

Redkite understands that childhood cancer impacts the whole family, estimating that over 11,000 individuals – children, siblings, and parents – will be affected by a new childhood cancer diagnosis over the next three years. This week marks #NationalCarersWeek in Australia. Many carers of a child with cancer, including parents, grandparents and siblings, face the challenge of supporting their family and their own wellbeing. For many carers, a diagnosis often means: 😥 High distress 💔 Substantial unmet psychosocial needs 🔽 Reduced capacity to work due to a huge carer load 🏠 Living away from home during treatment 💵 Financial burden Redkite recently advocated to the government to recognise unpaid carers of children with cancer, emphasising the need for awareness and support. We provided specific recommendations in response to an inquiry by the House of Representatives Committee, including: - Extending the concept of “recognition” in the Carer Recognition Act 2010, to include the right to support that will improve carer wellbeing and capacity to care. - Increasing obligations of agencies, departments and government funded programs to identify and address barriers that carers encounter, such as barriers related to Centrelink and childcare. Following our submission, Redkite presented with the House of Representatives Standing Committee at a public hearing. Redkite’s CEO, Monique Keighery, and National Advocacy Manager, Tim Rogers, spoke about the need for the Australian government to better recognise and support unpaid carers of a child with cancer. While Redkite adopts a family-centered approach, we alone cannot address all the challenges brought on by what one Redkite mother has described as “the most awful and stressful thing I have ever seen or been through in my life”. However, we believe that a collaborative effort is essential to provide comprehensive care and support for families facing childhood cancer. #SupportingCarers #Advocacy #MillionsOfReasonsToCare

Melinda French Gates seeks to change what she calls “needless” deaths amongst pregnant women. The Gates Foundation, co-chaired by Melinda French Gates, has committed to donating $370 million annually from 2023 to 2027 to help combat the tragedy of “needless” deaths amongst pregnant women. The funds will go toward #technology and #innovations that have the potential to save women’s lives. By 2030, they believe these innovations could save more than 2 million mothers from needless deaths and help break down the maternal #healthequity disparities that Black and indigenous women face. According to the #Goalkeepers Report, an annual publication from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, 800 women across the globe die every day from preventable pregnancy-related causes. In high-income countries like the U.S., Black and indigenous women die during pregnancy at three times the rate of white women. The #WHO fact sheets states that, every day in 2020, almost 800 women died from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. A maternal death occurred almost every two minutes in 2020. Almost 95% of all maternal deaths occurred in low and lower middle-income countries in 2020. Care by skilled health professionals before, during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborns. Sub-Saharan #Africa and Southern #Asia accounted for around 87% (253 000) of the estimated global maternal deaths in 2020. Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounted for around 70% of maternal deaths (202 000), while Southern Asia accounted for around 16% (47 000). The high number of maternal deaths in some areas of the world reflects inequalities in access to quality health services and highlights the gap between rich and poor. The MMR in low-income countries in 2020 was 430 per 100 000 live births versus 12 per 100 000 live births in high income countries. Humanitarian, conflict, and post-conflict settings hinder progress in reducing the burden of maternal mortality. The average MMR for very high and high alert fragile states in 2020 was 551 per 100 000, over double the world average. In high income countries, this is 1 in 5300, versus 1 in 49 in low-income countries. Women die as a result of complications during and following pregnancy and childbirth. The major complications that account for nearly 75% of all maternal deaths include: severe bleeding, infections; high blood pressure; complications from delivery; and unsafe abortion. The global MMR in 2020 was 223 per 100 000 live births; achieving a global MMR of less than 70 per 100,000 births by the year 2030 (SDG 3) will require an annual rate of reduction of 11.6%. Melinda French Gates call to action and the commitment of nearly $1.5 billion from 2023-2027 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will pivot the desired goal🎯 https://cbsn.ws/3tejrwK World Health Organization - https://lnkd.in/eUH89NAA Robert F.
