Green paper coming soon to share our discussions on the ways teachers, school leaders, researchers, teacher educators may and do engage in enriched use of evidence to inform practice
🌟 Today I had the privilege of joining a dynamic multi-stakeholder workshop at the University of Sydney School of Education & Social Work, where we tackled the topic: Enriching the Broad Base of Evidence to Inform Teaching Practice. Through rich conversations, one message was crystal clear: we need to trust and empower teachers. Classrooms are nuanced, complex spaces that don’t fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all box. Teachers, as expert professionals, know their students and their craft. It's time to resist rigid mandates that endorse single teaching methods as the only way to effective teaching and learning. A huge thanks to Nicole Brunker for hosting and facilitating such a thought-provoking session. I’m excited to see how our discussions evolve into the forthcoming green paper. 🙌 #flipthesystem Stephanie Wescott Tracey Taylor Sally Biskupic

"Look at most org charts. Can you see a teacher among the fluff?" Sam Jacob as CEO of Collarts (Australian College of the Arts) has a rich history in leadership among multiple global public, private and VET institutions including London South Bank University, Charles Darwin University, Deakin University, Monash University and Torrens University Australia Their diversity reflects how different institutions serve the range of learner needs as we seek to change more future lives for good. In this episode Sam talks with Professor Christy Collis of HERDSA Higher Education Research Society of Australasia and I, illustrating how most people in public universities have little understanding of private universities or the VET sector and how both work. What is clear, as we all develop better sectoral literacy and celebrate the richness of our sector ecology, is that diversity is good. What emerges is that all providers will only be student-centric if they are teacher-centric. This is an episode to cut through the fluff in the system from two great sector activists who will be part of a fluff free panel on sectoral diversity at the HEDx conference at UQ on October 31st with details of that in the comments.

Excited to share Dwyer et al.'s paper (2024), Schools as Inclusive Workplaces: Understanding the Needs of a Diverse Teaching Workforce in Australian Schools. This paper examines the gap between Australia's diverse population and its less diverse teaching profession, addressing the unique contributions and challenges faced by culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse (CLRD) teachers. The study highlights the need for culturally safe and inclusive school environments, better access to the profession for diverse individuals, and reforms in educational policies to support and retain a diverse workforce. Can't wait to cite this important paper! Special thanks to Dwyer et al. (2024) for citing our work: Nigar, N., Kostogriz, A., Gurney, L., & Janfada, M. (2024). ‘No one would give me that job in Australia’: when professional identities intersect with how teachers look, speak, and where they come from, and the AARE blog. How can educational systems and policies be reformed to allow access to the profession and better support and retain a diverse teaching workforce, and what role does cultural competency play in creating inclusive and equitable school environments? #DiversityInEducation #InclusiveEducation #TeacherRetention
Academic publishing can be sooo slow, but when the work is meaningful, it's worth the wait. It's such a privilege to work with this amazing team - Rachael Jacobs, Daniel X. Harris, Catherine MANATHUNGA, Jing Qi and Jiao Tuxworth (Mengjiao Wang) - doing work that we know is so important. Our first article of a few in the queue for this year. https://lnkd.in/gyr5BsXF
