BRE 365 tests - we need to move from infiltration testing to infiltration assessment. Sometimes when you are one of the authors of a document as large as the SuDS Manual you forget where you put things! Found this from the infiltration checklist in the appendices - any infiltration design for a catchment over 1,000m2 should be approved by a geotechnical engineer or engineering geologist. I see so many drainage reports and designs claiming "compliance" with the SuDS Manual but no approval from a ground engineering professional. It is not just testing - the overall ground model and sense checking of results is necessary. At The Environmental Protection Group (EPG) our ground engineering professionals are able to do these assessments - one advantage is that it allows us to design infiltration systems close to buildings (closer than 5m)

It astounds me that a test which was created to determine a parameter for the design of water dissipation solutions has all too often been turned into a test to disprove that solution. In this case proving a large soak away won’t work is ridiculous and most of the time yes Ben Smith often a box ticking exercise. Assessment of the ground conditions by a competent Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist prior to specifying a BRE Soakaway Test is essential. But why do we also hear so many times that ‘the client asked for it and so we had to do it’. Surely, it is time to start saying no to ridiculous specifications especially where there is little technical merit and creates risk. Just because we normally do it like this doesn’t make it right and doesn’t mean that there are no alternatives.

Projects I Worked on : The Integrated Rainwater Management Strategy Project in Alexandria City to separate the rainwater network from the sewage system. The project includes 3 phases, with 90% of the first phase completed so far. The first phase includes: · Gravity networks serving areas of various sizes as follows: 226000, 233000, 300000, 530000, 800000, 740000, and 2730000 m². · Construction of pumping stations with various capacities as follows: 25200, 26000, 35000, 43200, 100000, and 200000 m³/day. · The last pumping station pit was constructed with piles reaching 24m underground. · Two force mains were constructed using horizontal directional drilling, each 800m long and up to a depth of 14m within the Mediterranean Sea.
