Congratulations to Pi alumni, Andrea Van Vugt on completing her Masters Degree in Arts in Community Development!
The letter said: “Congratulations, your UVic credential has been awarded!” It’s official. I earned a Master of Arts in Community Development (MACD). More than three years of hard work had gone into creating this moment, and I looked back on the road to get there with gratitude and pride. I began my journey in the MACD program at the University of Victoria's School of Public Administration in May 2021. During my first residency at the UVic campus, I watched Professor Robert Lapper give a presentation about his experience working with marginalized individuals within the justice system. His presentation got the gears turning in my head. I introduced myself to Prof. Lapper, a senior public law lawyer who teaches at the UVic School of Public Administration and Faculty of Law. While we talked, he mentioned that the access to justice course he teaches contains very little content about disability. I was surprised and asked, "Really? Why?" Our conversation continued, and I promised to follow up with him. After the residency, I returned home with a newfound interest in learning about access to justice for disabled people. What exactly is access to justice, and how does it impact the disability community? Do law students receive education about disability in their curriculum? Do Canadian law schools offer dedicated law courses on disability? Eager to explore these questions, I discussed the potential for research with Prof. Lapper. He alerted me to the BC Access to Justice Centre for Excellence (ACE), an academic research institute at the University of Victoria's Faculty of Law. I connected with ACE to start a dialogue, and after finishing my coursework, I began working on my final research project with ACE as my client. My research identified eleven law schools in Canada that teach fifteen disability law courses. Nine of those courses have the word disability in their course names, and the other six courses have mental health in their course names. I conducted interviews with faculty of law who teach at Canadian law schools to learn more about: - Diversifying legal education curriculum in Canada - The importance of disability education at law schools - The potential impact disability education has on access to justice for disabled people Now, I'm excited to share my project with you! If you are interested in disability, justice, education, or law school, check out my project. The report is long, but the table of contents can help you find what interests you. Click the link below to see it. My convocation is next week, and I'm eager to celebrate my success. I'm also looking forward to returning to work and engaging with people. I'm open to connecting with anyone interested in discussing work opportunities, my research, or anything else, so please reach out with your questions, comments, or ideas. Let’s meet for coffee! 🙂 #DisabilityRights #DEI #Education #DisabilityAwareness #Accessibility #DisabledandProud #DisabilityJustice #Law
