Over time, the US Geological Survey (USGS) significantly reduced reserves from 36,000 tons (t) to 31,000 t in 2009. This adjustment was further lowered to 2,500 t in 2022/3. The decrease in USGS-estimated reserves and the adjustment of SA's figures were prompted by limitations in accessing ultra-low deep reserves, altering the global ranking due to the high costs associated with deeper gold mining. The 2021/22 adjustment to 2,500 t raises questions about the sustainability of gold production, especially at deeper levels.
