Criminalizing homelessness is not a solution to encampments. It is unfortunate that this U. S. Supreme Court decision does not focus on solutions to homelessness, which start with housing that people can afford and supportive services for those who need them. The energy, time and resources it could potentially take to enforce this ruling would be better spent addressing the issues of a housing shortage and high rents. https://lnkd.in/ecp78m-z

Homelessness is not a crime nor is mental illness. Unfortunately Massachusetts is one of the last two states without an Asssitant Outpatient Treatment law, a law that could help drastically change the outcomes for the homeless population with SMI in our state. Sadly I have many families reach out to me whose loved ones are now in the CJS in Massachusetts- unmedicated, in psychosis and in isolation. A family recently reached out to me - their son was in extreme psychosis and left their home in January and was living on the streets. He was found on the streets of Boston in very rough shape and hospitalized - sadly he passed away from sepsis. It is time for the country to focus on providing those with severe mental illness and SUD the medical care that is needed, the reason many of these individuals are homeless in the first place. The number of families that reach out to me with similar stories is astounishing! #shatteringsilence

I believe that it is well accepted in the psychiatric community that only 5% of our population - regardless of socioeconomic status - believes that Mental Illness is really a disease state. Rather, 95% of our population - the electorate - believes "what is mislabeled as mental illness is either laziness or inability to take the stresses of life we all must deal with." (Stahl) That means, 95% of the public does not beieve that psychosis, whether emotional blunting, hallucinations, paranoid delusions that cause violence and suicide - oftentimes associated with violence towards others - are either "lack of will power" or excessive stress. Lessons on public education could be learned from the LGBT community on justifying aggressive medical and surgical interventions for the centuries-old fluitidy of sexual identity that now requiers aggressive medical and surgical terventions without any scientific changes since Hopkins and University of Washington closed their Transgender programs. Regardless of your opinions on when and under what criteria Transsexual Transitioning is performed on children and adolescents, lessons can be learned from how to aggressively change public opinions and empower practitioners from LGBT community. .

This is so hard to read. Not the solution we need.

It’s Congress and State Legislators who need to develop a comprehensive plan to end homelessness. There must be more Supplemented public housing for poor people, as well as, more services for mental illness.
