MassChallenge Switzerland announced the 103 early-stage startups selected for its 2024 acceleration program. These startups represent the top 8% of applications from around the world, judged by over 300 independent experts. They come from 37 countries including Kenya's Organic Fields, A social-environmental enterprise addressing food waste from municipal markets by converting it into organic fertilizer. The startups range across 5 continents and are all committed to sustainability. The 2024 cohort, comprising startups from various industries, will participate in a 4-month program divided into four tracks. MassChallenge Switzerland, which has supported 720 alumni raising $1.4 billion since 2016, takes no equity or fees. The program connects startups with corporate partners, expert mentors, and investors. Matthew Lashmar, Managing Director of MassChallenge Switzerland, expressed excitement about helping the startups grow. "Now the fun starts and we can’t wait to start helping these startups connect with our partners and mentors so that they can get feedback on how to improve their business propositions. We hope they go on to grow and add value to our community and society." he said. During the acceleration program, the startups will engage with industry experts, corporates, and investors, receiving world-class mentoring, tailored programming, free co-working space, and networking opportunities. The program will conclude on October 31st with an awards ceremony, where the best startups will win up to CHF 1 million in zero-equity prize money and other in-kind prizes. 🚀 One of my favorite activities at the EIT Food Seedbed Incubator kickoff event in Bilbao was a brilliant exercise that perfectly combined learning and fun. 💡They divided us into two groups: one as investors and the other as startups. The investors were given chocolate coins (which I must say, as a chocolate expert, I appreciated the choice of currency!). Startups were instructed to pitch three times using different strategies: 1. The Elon Musk approach: "I'm the best, really don't need your money." 2. The begging strategy. 3. The overly technical strategy: focused on the problem and solution but neglected to talk about the product or ask for money. 🧠 The insights from this exercise were truly enlightening. Investors didn't know how many pitches they would hear, so many invested little to no money, always anticipating a better startup around the corner. It gave us a valuable perspective on the challenges and thought processes investors go through. A big thanks to Juan Ignacio Zaffora for organizing such an insightful and engaging activity. This morning, the first stretch of the EcoSystem Session offered a rich display of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. The EcoSystem Session is a pitch competition hosted by the alternative protein networking community, Bridge2Food, and sponsored by MANE. This is a competition between industry startups, providing them an avenue to showcase their most revolutionary innovations in the plant-based sector. Through this event, MANE aims to empower aspiring entrepreneurs and foster innovation in the food transition ecosystem across Europe, Asia & North America. A curated selection of six startups have pitched their ideas to an audience of industry experts and investors who make up the EcoSystem and act as judges through a real-time voting poll.
