#Collaboration between brands and retailers is paramount for the success of reuse & refill initiatives at scale. Embracing standardization and asset sharing is essential for the industry's evolution towards sustainability. The massive systemic change required to reduce #PlasticPollution will never happen without collaboration. For example, Asda, a prominent UK grocery store chain, recently announced the closure of its refill trials in four stores. They attempted to integrate and scale an independent model into larger retail formats. This proved challenging, citing increased costs, complexity, and space requirements as key obstacles. These operational and commercial issues, along with consumer barriers, led to Asda's decision to exit the refill trials. While in-store refill shopping has succeeded in independent zero-waste stores, the approach needs adaptation for larger retailers to thrive. On the other side, The Refill Coalition in the UK has pioneered a successful model, currently being trialed by Aldi, showcasing substantial operational cost reductions exceeding 80%. By shifting the responsibility of cleaning and refilling to logistics experts and suppliers, the solution demonstrates promising results. In an industry where the reduction of single-use plastics is progressively becoming a focal point, Aldi, in collaboration with the UK Refill Coalition, is piloting an in-store and online refill system for dry goods. This initiative, set to be implemented in Aldi’s Solihull store and through Ocado Retail’s online operations, aligns with the industry trend towards material-saving strategies. FULL #TRACEABILITY It's normally up to investigative journalists to stick RFID tags on packaging to follow its journey. Now retailers can follow every single piece of #packaging through its journey owing to new PRINTED tech. Marks and Spencer is teaming up with a recycling technology group to enable the retailer to trace what happens to its drinks bottles, cartons and other plastic packaging. The Polytag Limited system prints an invisible tag on to containers, which can be picked up by electronic readers located at recycling centres. Products featuring the tags will begin appearing on shelves in the next three months. Different aspects of the system have been tested with UK #retailers Co-op Aldi UK and Ocado Retail Ltd, the online grocery specialist which has also invested in #Polytag, but this will be the first full-scale use of the scheme.

ALDI USA is continuing to take strides in sustainability, making “thousands of small, intentional operational decisions every day that have a big impact on keeping our prices and our environmental footprint low.” Such decisions include switching to electronic shelf labels, reducing paper waste while optimizing labor; keeping store layouts smaller to keep operational costs low; offering a more limited assortment of products that are more locally sourced, cutting down on transportation resources; and educating consumers with their How2Recycle logo, which provides simple instructions on how to best recycle the packaging of their products. ALDI is also part of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and became a founding activator of the U.S. Plastics Pact about 4 years ago. They’ve made changes in their packaging, streamlining designs across products such as removing clear plastic windows from pasta boxes, saving nearly 50 tons of plastic each year.
