Data always tells a story, and in this case, cross-visitation was very telling. After observing chronic out-of-stocks across multiple markets in a pet category, Retail Lab and OMG, Inc-Sales and Marketing hypothesized that this trend was negatively impacting consumer behavior and loyalty. How could they validate whether the lack of stock availability drove customer leakage to specialty stores? → That's where Placer came in. Here's a glimpse into what was uncovered: - Consumers at high out-of-stock stores exhibited a preference for pet specialty stores, ranking a local Petco as #1 in their Top 10 Favorite Places. - By comparison, customers at low out-of-stock stores visited pet specialty stores far less frequently. Indeed, no pet specialty store appeared in the top 10 favorite places for customers at low out-of-stock store locations. Ok, let me be the first one to say it out loud. It’s not normal for the two CEO’s of the largest pet retailers in the US to step down in a six month span of the same calendar year! Now it appears that the PetSmart CEO stepped down to move to another company unrelated to pet, as the CEO. What is this telling us? The plot thickens …. Obviously a sign of slower than normal year to year comp sales and profits. We have seen this almost across the board in retailers in general in 2024, a result of goods for sale inflation and consumers voting with or without their their dollars as a response. Inventories of “nice to have” goods are backing up and overall turns versus normal years are certainly down, as consumers look for lower cost alternatives, even on “need to have” goods. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out in final 2024 earnings reports. Feel like the pet industry is coming back a little with more normal inflation rates in recent months. We shall see………..

During May it is Pet Month in the U.S. 🐶 😺 🐦 🐊 Reviewing many of the key Supermarket chains/Retail Media Networks [Target, Walmart, H-E-B, Hy-Vee, Inc., Kroger, and Giant Eagle, Inc.] it seems there is a huge opportunity missed for most. Typically most marketing and advertising activity is centred around major key events, new product launches, and stimulating sales holistically. Stats show that the U.S. pet care market size reached USD $89.05 billion in 2023. So being Pet Month, it’s an opportune time for Retailers and Brands, to engage Pet owners. Target and Walmart are the only two that reference Pet Month. Target has a great page utilising UCG demonstrating product placement [link in comments below]. However, there are so many more surprise, unique, personalised, and repeatable, customer engagement opportunities. Think quizzes [onsite] and sweepstakes [onsite and offsite driven] as just two examples, to inform product discovery and data capture for personalised experiences during and after purchase. OK - there is a bit of irony in this photo of an ad for Smalls, #catfood on the #NYC subway, and the dude who is sleeping beneath it. That aside, the brand has been around for some time with its #DTC business model and, better for your cat, food! It uses a quiz to help cat parents determine the food that is right for their feline family member. Questionnaires/Quizzes are critical to #masscustomization. Rather than being truly personalized, these tools help channel consumers into a set of already developed products...enabling the feeling of "just for me," with an execution that does not create the need for an unlimited number of #SKUs. And in this case, the consumer cannot even make a choice about which food to buy without first taking the survey. This model will undoubtedly evolve with #GenAI, but as of now, it seems like the closest we have to offering consumers some form of personalization via a business model that can be profitable. #innovation Nestlé Purina North America #consumerbehavior
