Hands-on CEO with passion for Technology, Sustainability and "Making things Happen", Entrepreneur, Investor, Finance Professional with MSc in Finance & Investment
Those who know me well know that I don't talk much unless I have something worth saying. There's too much talk and not enough action out there, and my whole life is about ACTION. But this time, I do have something to say - and quite a bit, actually (Warning! 😊). First of all, thanks to Guy Hayler, Baz Bignell, Ben White, Sasha Cook and the rest of the team for organizing the Blue Earth Summit Investment Forum event with the intention of bringing investments into #impact driven businesses. With the desperate lack of #investment in UK businesses, such events are much welcomed. The #consumer-focused panel was very insightful. Thanks to Sally Beken for introducing the concept of #Citizens into the world of e-commerce and to Jessica Sue Rasmussen DipWSET for predicting that in 10 years, every business will be sustainable. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that. This panel totally echoed my own thoughts and confirmed the desperate need for what we are doing at questionZERO. Consumers can and should become 'Citizens' because they (US / WE) have the power to enact real change quickly. And of course, it was a real pleasure to present questionZERO on stage and see the positive nods from Simon Hill-Norton and many others in the audience when I mentioned how complex e-commerce is and the challenges we face. But that's not exactly why I'm writing this post. Yes, #science and #ecommerce can work together, thanks to our support from the University of Exeter and SETsquared Exeter, but can #sustainability and e-commerce work together? This is a BIG question at the moment. While I was at BlueEarth, my colleagues were presenting questionZERO at DMWF Expo, and we appeared to be the only sustainability-focused business there. These two words, sustainability and e-commerce, seem worlds apart, but it shouldn't be like that. E-commerce is all about money, CPAs, CPLs, ROI, etc. - in short, it's all about money and #profitability. But as Sophie Bidwell said at the Blue Earth "What Makes It Perfect Impact Investment" panel, sustainable businesses cannot create impact if they don't make profits either. It wasn't our initial plan (in truth, we thought that achieving real sustainability in e-commerce, and not just greenwashing, would be much easier), but it looks like questionZERO is one of the few fit for this challenge and in a unique position to connect sustainability and e-commerce together to benefit both and, of course, the Planet. Looking forward to represent questionZERO at two events in October this year - Economist Impact Sustainability Week: Countdown to COP29 in Amsterdam and PI LIVE Show Europe in London. Mind the gap...

You know how everyone's talking about going green? Well, we're on board too! Our office is pretty much digital now - less paper clutter and hey, trees get to breathe! And those old-school light bulbs? Replaced them with energy savers. We're also big on remote work – less travel means less pollution. But it's not just about what we do in-house. When we look at new companies to invest in, we're searching for those who care about the environment as much as we do. Think green tech, sustainable startups – that's where the future's at! And let's be real, it's not just about feeling good. Eco-friendly businesses are booming, so it’s a win-win. Investing in sustainability is good for the planet and our portfolios. So that's our green journey at Strathsquare Point. We’re learning and improving as we go, but we're excited about making a difference toward a greener future! #Strathsquarepoint #greenfuture #sustainability

☀️ 𝐎𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐫: Commons 💰 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 Sequoia Capital, Amasia, Norrsken VC amongst others, Commons is an app that enables users to track and reduce their carbon footprints, offering practical guidance and rewards for sustainable living ✨ 💚 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: The startup reports that in 2022, Commons users, numbering in the tens of thousands and growing, reduced their footprint by an average of 20% and saved $200 a month. "The app educates consumers about ways to live sustainably - covering from how to compost in an apartment to switching to fossil-fuel-free 401k. When users link their spending data, they can track their real-time carbon footprint and see the emissions behind their purchases. They receive personalized tips based on spending — including relevant brands and guides. Users can also buy carbon offsets, a way of canceling unavoidable carbon emissions by supporting projects that decrease them." https://lnkd.in/dFrUwega 🤓 The UI looks so sleek! Intrigued to learn about the work by the Commons and the founding story by Sanchali Pal who founded the company “to make it easy for people to make spending choices that are better for them and better for the planet” after relentlessly tracking her own carbon emissions manually on a spreadsheet for over six years and lowered emissions by ~30%. If you’re in 🇺🇸 or 🇨🇦, check it out - while I await for their global expansion 🌍 📸 Source: https://lnkd.in/dHXwHAj7 #carbonfootprint #personalimpact #carbonoffsets #climatesolutions #sustainableliving #greenliving #impactstartup

Are carbon removal startups stagnating? In the world of green startups, there are 100s of new companies that work on pretty innovative ways for carbon removal from the atmosphere. Reducing CO2 to fight climate change involves two parts: - Reducing the release of new carbon emissions - Cleaning up existing CO2 But despite the startup boom in the carbon removal market, the demand remains low. The reason is pretty straightforward - its cost. It's cheaper for businesses to pick sustainable methods of production that reduce CO2 emissions, but it's costly to clean up existing carbon levels. For us to reach net-zero goals by 2050, the world collectively needs to remove 5 billion tons of carbon every year. Is it time we shift focus to carbon removal efforts as sustainable production becomes more mainstream? Image source: Canva #Green #Business #Climate

How can we drive green innovation and business forward with zero budget? As a self-funded start-up, your reality is this: you need to learn how to leverage other people's offices and develop bright ideas without incurring any significant costs. Lucky for us, running a company born in Sweden with a pure focus on green transformation! Sweden shines as a hub for sustainable innovation in the startup sector – a reality we've been fortunate to engage with directly. Despite its modest size, the country's institutional culture strongly encourages the sharing and experimentation with new, transformative ideas, which has been key to our process. 🟠 Our partnership with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden through the Green Transition Leap program has been pivotal in embracing the best solutions and research-derived innovation based on insights from hand-picked researchers and experts matching our needs. Thanks to Anneli Selvefors and Matilda Leivas for leading the sprints together with some of your smart colleagues, helping us establish a solid foundation to support the circular transition. 🟠 The backing from Almi has been instrumental, providing both financial assistance and invaluable knowledge that has guided us through the business development process. This support has not only fueled our initiatives but also highlighted the effectiveness of help from governmental and regional authorities. Special thanks to Patrik Kägu and Christian Isberg for your insights and support along the journey. 🟠 Stockholms stad reinforcement has enabled us to work with innovation partners like Toolspace, where hours of smart input and engagement, especially from Mikael Beving, exemplify local partnerships with potential for much wider scaling dynamics and a good overview of the climate impact of decisions taken. Our diverse team is spread across the globe, yet Sweden has been our home turf for innovation and the market for testing ideas. An ideal launching pad for the glocal mission we're on that has helped us get to where we are now – with nothing more than our time (and amazing people around us, more about that later) to ship in from start 🌍

Impact Hubs across the globe have been taking action to address environmental issues for years. Action through programs that facilitate startup-corporate collaboration, action through events, and through local and global partnerships. It is time to align our efforts globally, provide a sense of direction and also improve our way of measuring impact, and telling the story of our contribution. 🌏 At the end of 2023 Impact Hub launched the network's Environmental Strategy as part of our 2030 Ambition. The planet demands us to take action now, and as a global network, it is time to step forward and align our efforts to achieve impact at scale for a just and green transition. 💚 We want to be brave. We want to question the status-quo - and be a contributor to reimagining different systems and economic models to create a world in which nature and humans thrive. 🌱 That's why: - We will set the example through our own spaces by becoming the first CO2 neutral coworking community by 2025 and “green” our operations! - We want to support the 24000+ entrepreneurs in our global community to consider their environmental impact and act on it. - We aim to scale the impact of entrepreneurs with a focus on sustainable food & agriculture, net-zero (energy, industry, mobility, etc.) or circular models faster. There’s a need for disruption. It’s time to rethink the future. Time to redesign business. 🤔🚀 Impact Hub Network Impact Hub Switzerland WWF Circular Economy Switzerland Franck Areal CE Transition – Circular Economy Transition Rahel Gerber Anja Nieveler Seraina Winter Stephanie Reinau Marina Hasler Alex P. I'm excited to launch the first Crucialworks venture today, EasyGreen, a service that helps small-to-medium businesses run faster, greener websites at reduced costs with zero hassle. https://easygreen.digital/ How I got here. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 Digital emissions are a creeping problem. The internet's impact creates more CO₂ than air travel. By 2025, this is predicted to grow to 20% of the world's total electricity consumption and up to 5.5% of global carbon emissions. Small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) can play a part in reducing these emissions whilst also reducing their costs and improving digital performance, customer experience and sentiment. Individually, their emissions impact is small, but collectively, it is significant—there are at least 100,000 content management websites run by UK SMBs with 5-49 employees. With an average (low estimate) footprint of 60kg Co2 / year, that is 6,000,000kg of Co2 / year collectively. There is lots of room for improvement. EasyGreen is built to do just this. 𝐖𝐡𝐲? - For many SMBs, managing their website is a pain, never mind ensuring it's optimised to be green, fast, and secure. Many report unpredictable costs or unsatisfactory service levels with current providers. - Our analysis shows that most SMB websites could reduce their digital emissions by 50% whilst improving performance. 𝐇𝐨𝐰? Make adopting sustainable web design practices easy and attractive by wrapping the impact potential in a common pain reliever — a better website maintenance and hosting plan. The EasyGreen proposition: - Subscription-based, predictable pricing - Hassle-free, set and forget maintenance - High-performance, green hosting - Tools to improve performance, reduce emissions - Easy, free migration - Scalable export support, use what you need, nothing you don't 𝐈 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 EasyGreen has been live for three weeks, and we've already onboarded 21 businesses. I think EasyGreen could help 1000 businesses run faster, greener websites at reduced costs with zero hassle within the next three years, but I need your help! If you know of a community, network or even a business that might benefit from this service then I'd MASSIVELY appreciate your thoughts and an opportunity to connect and showcase EasyGreen. https://easygreen.digital/ #sustainableweb #greenhosting #SaaS
