It has been a great honor to participate in the “Empowering Change: Greece's Journey Towards a Sustainable Energy Landscape” panel, moderated by @Patti Domm, FWA Board Member and Emmy award-winning financial journalist, at the @Financial Women's Association International Business Conference held in Athens. During the discussion with esteemed fellow speakers, I highlighted the pivotal role that critical #rawmaterials play not only in national security and economic growth, but also in #Europe’s climate goals, strategic autonomy and #greentransition.   In this direction, Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), the flagship legislative initiative to ensure EU’s secure and sustainable supply of #criticalrawmaterials, creates a remarkable opportunity for #Greece, one of the most well-endowed mineral European countries, to exploit its mineral wealth in a #sustainable way.   In fact, more than 15 mineral raw materials included in the list of strategic and critical mineral raw materials, have been traced in Greek territory, while our #copper and #gold porphyry deposit at the transformational #Skouries project on the Halkidiki Peninsula in Northern Greece, will play a game – changing role for our country, upon commencement of commercial production in Q3 2025. #HellasGold #ResponsibleMining #FWAIBC2024 #FWAIBCGreece

Agua Muerta - Cuninico: https://lnkd.in/ezSMyE9j This concise documentary amplifies the voices of the residents of Cuninico, a Kukama Kukamiria Native Community situated along the Marañon River in Loreto, Peru. In 2014, the community endured one of Peru's most significant environmental catastrophes when over 3000 barrels of oil leaked into the Cuninico river due to corrosion of the Norperuvian Pipeline. Since then, the community has grappled with contaminated water and food, leading to the pervasive presence of heavy metals in both the environment and residents' bodies, resulting in severe illnesses and a profound disruption of their traditional way of life. Despite prevailing in a legal battle against Petroperu for negligence in maintaining the Norperuvian pipeline, the community, even after a decade, awaits the full implementation and execution of indemnification, remediation, and health initiatives. Through poignant testimonies, this short documentary sheds light on the ongoing struggles and resilience of the people of Cuninico.

Today, on the United Nations' World Environment Day, Anglo American claims that they, “have a responsibility to ensure that land is restored to how it was before our stewardship.”   This statement is completely at odds with the reality of Anglo American’s toxic legacy in #Kabwe, Zambia, where tens of thousands of children and women of child-bearing age allege that they have been poisoned by lead left behind by the Kabwe Mine, which was an Anglo American mine for nearly 50 years (1925-1974).   Today, people in Kabwe still live in one of the most polluted places in the world. Their homes, gardens, schools, public areas, and roads are polluted with lead. The World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are clear: there's no safe level of lead exposure. Studies show alarmingly high lead levels in children, with lasting health consequences like brain damage and even death. Generations have suffered. Anglo American knew of the dangers of environmental lead poisoning around Kabwe communities and failed to prevent harm coming to the children and women of the local communities.   Now, Anglo American South Africa is facing a class action lawsuit. The Kabwe Claimants allege that Anglo American South Africa is liable because it played a key role in controlling, managing, supervising and advising on technical, medical, and safety aspects of the operations of the Mine, deficiencies in which resulted in heavy contamination of the local environment with lead. In a recent development in this case, on Friday April 19, the Johannesburg High Court granted the Kabwe Claimants permission to appeal a recent judgment which denied class certification of this class action. I go down memory lane to remind you about Ghana's Sinohydro US$2billion Sinohydro deal with China, somewhere in 2019: An international agreement that would have ensured Ghana and China trade in bauxite in exchange for cash worth US$2billion. The Chinese-backed bauxite-aluminum mine planned for the Atewa forest reserve in Ghana had debt-trap concerns and environmental sustainability challenges. Electric Cars/Vehicles are a sham! They are not Eco-Friendly! We all know by now, that the amount of energy spent to produce a single battery, and its environmental impact is way worse in comparison to owning a "dirty" diesel vehicle. (lithium battery disposal is a whole other subject) The EU faces scrutiny for endorsing Lithium mining, particularly in Serbia, risking ecological damage and water pollution. Interestingly enough, the EU is not expanding mining in Germany where lithium deposits are in Linewald, or expanding mining operations in Spain, Portugal, France etc. Rather, without environmental protection in their mind, they are insisting and imposing on the illegal mining of Lithium in the fertile lands in Serbia, polluting rivers that are regional drinking water sources. This hideous crime is in the making and the people of Serbia will not stand idly by! in 2023 more than 200,000 people took to the streets to protest this Rio Tinto project, and it was officially shut down by the government. The people of Serbia, do not expect a decision reversal and we will fight fiercely against it. Therefore we are mobilizing against these actions, as seen in the massive protests last year. Another protest is planned for Friday, June 28th. Let's stand together for sustainability and environmental protection.
